{"id":1003089,"date":"2018-12-20T17:02:14","date_gmt":"2018-12-20T21:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/democrats.org\/?p=1003089"},"modified":"2024-05-23T20:11:57","modified_gmt":"2024-05-23T20:11:57","slug":"republicans-in-wisconsin-and-michigan-dismiss-voters-in-undemocratic-power-grab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/democrats.org\/news\/republicans-in-wisconsin-and-michigan-dismiss-voters-in-undemocratic-power-grab\/","title":{"rendered":"Republicans in Wisconsin and Michigan Dismiss Voters in Undemocratic Power Grab"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">After Democrats won every statewide office on the ballot last month, Republicans in Wisconsin and Michigan are overriding the will of the voters and working to reduce the power of the incoming administrations simply because they aren\u2019t happy with the results of the election.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Wisconsin Senate GOP Leader Scott Fitzgerald summed up the GOP\u2019s power grab motives before the lame duck session saying Republicans \u201cdon&#8217;t trust Tony Evers right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2018\/12\/03\/gop-senate-leader-scott-fitzgerald-we-dont-trust-tony-evers-right-now\/2191923002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2018\/12\/03\/gop-senate-leader-scott-fitzgerald-we-dont-trust-tony-evers-right-now\/2191923002\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1545424593811000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG3-xP-EhaD-T6cxGMlq-wkwY4Cpg\">Wisconsin Senate GOP Leader Scott Fitzgerald<\/a>: \u201cI mean, most of these items are things (that) we never really had to kind of address because guess what \u2014 we trusted Scott Walker and the administration to be able to manage the back and forth with the Legislature. We don\u2019t trust Tony Evers right now in a lot of these areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Following an all-night, behind-the-scenes session, Wisconsin Republicans passed a wide-ranging package that diminishes the power of Governor-elect Tony Evers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/05\/us\/wisconsin-power-republicans.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/05\/us\/wisconsin-power-republicans.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1545424593811000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHkZ6iDZ148FtZ0nLTp3P9LyHHztQ\">The New York Times<\/a>: \u201cThe legislation was aimed at undermining Democrats. There would be a new limit on early voting, which tends to benefit Democratic candidates, after an election that saw record-breaking turnout. Lawmakers, not the governor, would control the majority of appointments on an economic development board. The legislation would also prevent Mr. Evers from banning guns in the Wisconsin Capitol without permission from legislators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Wisconsin GOP bill to bypass Attorney General-elect Josh Kaul limits the office\u2019s authority over litigation, ensuring Wisconsin continues to back an unpopular lawsuit to dismantle the Affordable Care Act.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/05\/us\/wisconsin-power-republicans.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/05\/us\/wisconsin-power-republicans.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1545424593811000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHkZ6iDZ148FtZ0nLTp3P9LyHHztQ\">The New York Times<\/a>: \u201cThe attorney general could no longer appoint a solicitor general to represent the state in major lawsuits, and would be restricted in how he spent settlement money, which lawmakers would now oversee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Wisconsin election officials say that limiting early voting to 14 days will disenfranchise voters and create confusion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2018\/12\/05\/lame-duck-session-early-voting-limits-sow-confusion-run-up-february-election\/2216242002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2018\/12\/05\/lame-duck-session-early-voting-limits-sow-confusion-run-up-february-election\/2216242002\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1545424593811000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH9WJpgIfMnj3IE1l4QKCyfoCjqWQ\">Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel<\/a>: \u201c\u2018This will create an unnecessary hardship for a lot of voters. And I don&#8217;t think creating unnecessary hardship is consistent with democracy,\u2019 said Neil Albrecht, executive director of the Election Commission for the City of Milwaukee, where almost 10 percent of voters cast in-person absentee ballots in November\u2019s midterm elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2018\/12\/05\/lame-duck-session-early-voting-limits-sow-confusion-run-up-february-election\/2216242002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2018\/12\/05\/lame-duck-session-early-voting-limits-sow-confusion-run-up-february-election\/2216242002\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1545424593811000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH9WJpgIfMnj3IE1l4QKCyfoCjqWQ\">Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel<\/a>: \u201cBut, much like voter ID laws and other restrictions, it is widely seen by critics as a move to curtail voting, especially in large, urban areas that tend to vote Democratic. Many point to the latest governor&#8217;s race, which was decided by 30,000 votes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In Michigan, Republicans are working to slash voter-backed proposals to raise the minimum wage to $12 per hour and require employers to provide sick time for employees.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2018\/12\/04\/schuette-minimum-wage-paid-sick-leave\/2202559002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2018\/12\/04\/schuette-minimum-wage-paid-sick-leave\/2202559002\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1545424593811000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEgdysQnHaR17gyKfyFfGzXFRJxVw\">The Detroit News<\/a>: \u201cThe Michigan Legislature has never attempted to adopt and amend a citizen initiative in the same session. But Republican legislators are attempting to do so in the lame-duck session after adopting paid sick leave and minimum wage initiatives in September. Keeping them off the ballot made them easier to change, requiring a simple majority instead of a three-quarters vote in both chambers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Michigan Republicans are also working to limit Attorney General-elect Dana Nessel\u2019s role and advance a proposal to strip campaign finance oversight from Secretary of State-elect Jocelyn Benson\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/12\/04\/673397918\/michigan-republicans-aim-to-pass-bill-to-limit-powers-of-state-democrats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/12\/04\/673397918\/michigan-republicans-aim-to-pass-bill-to-limit-powers-of-state-democrats&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1545424593811000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFKFPSFMO2LQ7e7FQvNIahhri_tgw\">NPR<\/a>: \u201cWell, one of the bills that they are upset about would let the state House and Senate intervene in state legal proceedings.
