A new inspector general report found \u201cserious shortcomings\u201d in the GSA\u2019s decision to overlook concerns that Trump\u2019s ownership of a D.C. hotel violated the Constitution.<\/p>\n

The GSA \u201cignored\u201d the Constitution\u2019s Emoluments Clause when it allowed Trump to keep his D.C. hotel.<\/p>\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cThe General Services Administration \u2018ignored\u2019 concerns that President Trump\u2019s lease on a government-owned building \u2014 the one that houses his Trump International Hotel in Washington \u2014 might violate the Constitution when it allowed Trump to keep the lease after he took office, according to a new report from the agency\u2019s inspector general.\u201d<\/p>\n

The GSA IG report said that the GSA\u2019s decision-making process related to Trump\u2019s hotel \u201cincluded serious shortcomings.\u201d<\/p>\n

IG Report<\/a>: \u201cGSA\u2019s decision-making process related to tenant\u2019s possible breach of the lease included serious shortcomings. GSA had an obligation to uphold and enforce the Constitution. However, GSA opted not to seek any guidance from OLC and did not address the constitutional issues related to the management of the lease.\u201d<\/p>\n

Concerns about Trump\u2019s lease were immediately raised after Trump\u2019s election, but the GSA seemed unconcerned about looking into it.<\/p>\n

At the time, the GSA officer in charge of making the decision on Trump\u2019s hotel called concerns over him keeping his lease \u201ca fair amount of nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bloomberg<\/a>: \u201cShortly after Donald Trump won the presidential election, the U.S. official who oversees the lease of his signature Washington hotel offered Trump\u2019s company an assessment of a report about its potential conflict of interest: \u2018Nonsense.\u2019 Four months later, the same official cleared Trump\u2019s company to keep its lease for the Trump International Hotel Washington DC. throughout the president\u2019s time in office — a decision that may have saved Trump millions of dollars, based on a statement his lawyers made in a court filing in May. Kevin Terry, the GSA\u2019s contracting officer in charge of the hotel lease, referred to the issue in a Nov. 11, 2016, email to Trump\u2019s company, forwarding an article from the news site BuzzFeed that said his agency had acknowledged the potential conflict of interest. \u2018FYI – A fair amount of nonsense,\u2019 Terry wrote.
