After speaking with the NRA \u201con numerous occasions\u201d and touting himself as \u201cvery good for the NRA,\u201d Trump has now backed down from his calls for strengthening background checks. Trump is beholden to the NRA, so it\u2019s no wonder Americans disapprove of his response to the El Paso and Dayton shootings.<\/p>\n

Trump backed off his call yesterday for stronger background checks, saying that we already have enough in place right now.<\/p>\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cWe do have a lot of background checks right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump also regurgitated NRA talking points and said that mental health, not guns, are the problem.<\/p>\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cIt’s the people that pull the trigger, not the gun that pulls the trigger so we have a very, very big mental health problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cI don\u2019t want people to forget that this is a mental health problem.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want them to forget that, because it is. It\u2019s a mental health problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

The overwhelming majority of Americans support background checks. And the NRA is more unpopular than ever.<\/p>\n

Fox News poll<\/a>: 90 percent of Americans support universal background checks, including 89 percent of Republicans and 93 percent of gun households<\/p>\n

Fox News<\/a>: \u201cThis is the first time the organization [NRA] has had a net negative rating.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s no wonder Americans disapprove of Trump\u2019s handling of the aftermath of the El Paso and Dayton shootings.<\/p>\n
