It\u2019s been over 200 days since the House passed bipartisan legislation to expand background checks, which 93 percent<\/a> of Americans support. This weekend, Pelosi and Schumer warned Trump that any gun violence reform must include universal background checks. Despite that, and despite saying multiple times that he supports background checks in the wake of a mass shooting, Trump still takes the side of the NRA.<\/p>\n

2\/22\/18: TRUMP SAID HE SUPPORTS BACKGROUND CHECKS: Trump vowed to support comprehensive background checks after the Parkland school shooting.<\/p>\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cI will be strongly pushing Comprehensive Background Checks with an emphasis on Mental Health. Raise age to 21 and end sale of Bump Stocks! Congress is in a mood to finally do something on this issue – I hope!\u201d<\/p>\n

3\/1\/18: TRUMP SPOKE WITH THE NRA AND BACKED DOWN: Trump then softened his support after meeting with the NRA, and threatened to veto bipartisan House-passed universal background check legislation.<\/p>\n

The Hill<\/a>: \u201cThe White House on Monday issued a statement warning that President Trump would veto proposed legislation to enhance background checks for gun purchases if it passes the House and Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n

8\/7\/19: TRUMP SAID HE SUPPORTS BACKGROUND CHECKS: Trump once again vowed to support comprehensive background checks after the El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio mass shootings.<\/p>\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201c\u2018I\u2019m looking to do background checks,\u2019 Trump said, without providing any details. \u2018I think we can bring up background checks like we\u2019ve never had before … [Congress is] getting close to a bill.\u2019 \u2018We have to have very meaningful background checks, he added.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cTrump said \u2018there is a great appetite\u2019 for tightening background checks on people who buy firearms.\u201d<\/p>\n

8\/21\/19: TRUMP SPEAKS WITH THE NRA AND BACKS DOWN: Trump then took background checks off the table after speaking with the NRA, and Mitch McConnell won\u2019t bring the House-passed bill to a vote without Trump\u2019s support.<\/p>\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cPresident Trump talked Tuesday with National Rifle Association chief executive Wayne LaPierre and assured him that universal background checks were off the table, according to several people familiar with the call.\u201d<\/p>\n
