Ron DeSantis is intensifying his efforts to de-emphasize racism in his state\u2019s public school curriculum by arguing that some Black people benefited from being enslaved and defending his state\u2019s new African American history standards that civil rights leaders and scholars say misrepresents centuries of U.S. reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018They\u2019re probably going to show that some of the folks that eventually parlayed, you know, being a blacksmith into doing things later in life,\u2019 DeSantis said on Friday in response to reporters\u2019 questions while standing in front of a nearly all-White crowd of supporters.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DeSantis\u2019s comments have led some Republicans to rebuke the Florida governor for his defense of the state\u2019s new education standards.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/florida-gop-rep-byron-donalds-and-desantis-allies-clash-over-states-new-black-history-curriculum\/\">CBS News<\/a>: \u201cGOP Rep. Byron Donalds, the sole Black member of Florida&#8217;s congressional delegation, is at odds with the state Education Department and Gov. Ron DeSantis, after criticizing a clarification in middle school instruction standard on Black history. According to the standard, instruction includes \u2018how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.\u2019&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/tim-scott-rebukes-ron-desantis-florida-black-history-standards-slavery-rcna96787\">NBC News<\/a>: \u201c\u2018As a country founded upon freedom, the greatest deprivation of freedom was slavery. There is no silver lining \u2026 in slavery,\u2019 Scott \u2014 like DeSantis, a GOP presidential candidate \u2014 said here in response to a reporter&#8217;s question after a forum with Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018What slavery was really about was separating families, about mutilating humans and even raping their wives. It was just devastating,\u2019 Scott said. \u2018So I would hope that every person in our country \u2014 and certainly running for president \u2014 would appreciate that. People have bad days. Sometimes they regret what they say. And we should ask them again to clarify their positions.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-07-24\/florida-s-new-slavery-curriculum-spurs-desantis-attack-from-2024-rival-will-hurd#xj4y7vzkg\">Bloomberg<\/a>: \u201cWill Hurd said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, his rival for the Republican presidential nomination, should take responsibility for a new state curriculum that calls for teaching that slavery gave enslaved people valuable skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018Implying that there is an upside to slavery is absolutely wrong,\u2019 said Hurd.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MAGA Republicans are busy arguing about whether some enslaved people benefited from slavery and railing against children\u2019s freedom to learn our full history when they should be discussing how to provide relief for hardworking families.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/tim-scott-rebukes-ron-desantis-florida-black-history-standards-slavery-rcna96787\">NBC News<\/a>: \u201cSpeaking with reporters in Albia, Iowa, on Friday, DeSantis responded to Scott&#8217;s comments by criticizing \u2018D.C. Republicans\u2019 for promoting a similar argument as Harris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018I think part of the reason our country has struggled is because D.C. Republicans all too often accept false narratives, accept lies that are perpetrated by the left and accept the lie that Kamala Harris has been perpetrating, even when that has been debunked,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018That\u2019s not the way you do it,\u2019 he added. \u2018The way you do it, the way you lead is to fight back against the lies, is to speak the truth. And so I\u2019m here defending my state of Florida against false accusations and against lies, and we\u2019re going to continue to speak the truth.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018That\u2019s not the way you do it,\u2019 he added. \u2018The way you do it, the way you lead is to fight back against the lies, is to speak the truth.
