While President Biden has vowed to protect Medicare and Medicaid, Republicans are trying out-MAGA each other with their all-out war on these essential programs while they cozy up to special interests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MAGA Republicans running for president have pushed an agenda of ripping away essential programs from hardworking Americans and seniors across the country.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/02\/09\/trump-desantis-biden-social-security-medicare\/\">Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cHis avowed stance, however, is at odds with <strong>Trump\u2019s <\/strong>own record as president: Each of his White House budget proposals included cuts to Social Security and Medicare programs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/newsletter\/02\/09\/2023\/do-2024-republicans-have-a-tea-party-problem\">Semafor<\/a>: \u201cDuring his time in Congress, meanwhile, Florida Gov. Ron <strong>DeSantis <\/strong>voted for a series of budget resolutions crafted by the conservative Republican Study Committee that would have voucherized Medicare for new beneficiaries, slowed Social Security cost of living increases, and raised the retirement age for both programs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DNCWarRoom\/status\/1683858962331111426?s=20\"><strong>Scott<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cWe also have to look at the overall entitlement state of our nation. &#8230; In order for us to tame the tiger, we\u2019re going to have to take a serious look at the overall entitlement state that we have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/02\/09\/trump-desantis-biden-social-security-medicare\/\">Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cNikki <strong>Haley, <\/strong>the former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador who is planning to announce her own presidential bid this month, also praised Ryan\u2019s Medicare proposal at the time and said lawmakers should examine Medicare and Social Security spending to address federal debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018What they need to be doing is looking at entitlements,\u2019 Haley said in a 2010 interview on Fox News. \u2018Look at Social Security. Look at Medicaid. Look at Medicare. Look at these things, and let\u2019s actually go to the heart of what is causing government to grow, and tackle that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/15\/us\/politics\/pence-2024-preparations.html\">New York Times<\/a>: \u201cMr. <strong>Pence<\/strong> says Social Security and Medicare must be trimmed back as part of any serious plan to deal with the national debt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2011\/09\/audio-chris-christie-koch-brothers-seminar\/\"><strong>Christie<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cWe\u2019re going to have to reduce Medicare benefits. We\u2019re going to have to reduce Medicaid benefits. We\u2019re going to have to raise the Social Security age. We\u2019re going to have to do these things. We\u2019re going to have to cut all types of other government programs that some people in this room might like.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Instead of protecting essential programs for working families, MAGA Republicans have helped special interests line their pockets with tax giveaways.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/17\/business\/trump-opportunity-zone-jobs.html\">New York Times<\/a>: \u201cA new tax break that President <strong>Trump<\/strong> frequently touts as a boon to Black Americans and hard-hit communities is spurring relatively little job creation while disproportionately helping high-profit real estate projects and not small businesses, an extensive new study by the Urban Institute has found.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2022\/05\/17\/tim-scott-abortion-single-black-mothers-economic-problems\/\"><strong>Scott<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cIn 2017, I was <strong>one of the architects<\/strong> of reforming the personal side of the tax code.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jasongarcia.substack.com\/p\/after-taking-money-from-walmart-heirs\">Seeking Rents<\/a>: \u201cLast year, Florida Gov. Ron <strong>DeSantis<\/strong> and the Republican-controlled state Legislature teamed up to pass a pair of bills that made it easier for billionaires to hide their fortunes from the outside world \u2014 and from federal taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/02\/14\/opinions\/presidential-ambitions-nikki-haley-2024-bailey\/index.html\">CNN Opinion<\/a>: \u201c<strong>Haley<\/strong> proposed a tax swap, a lowering of the top marginal income tax rate for the wealthiest South Carolinians in exchange for an increase in the gas fee that everyone pays.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2014\/03\/25\/gov-mike-pence-sign-business-tax-cuts\/6859237\/\">IndyStar<\/a>: \u201cGov. Mike <strong>Pence <\/strong>on Tuesday signed into law a package of tax cuts for business that would give Indiana one of the nation\u2019s lowest corporate tax rates. Senate Bill 1 would reduce the corporate income tax to 4.9 percent from 6.5 percent by 2021, making it the second-lowest in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/richmond.com\/news\/state-and-regional\/govt-and-politics\/youngkin-seeks-additional-1-billion-in-individual-corporate-tax-cuts\/article_ed007e7e-6ba2-5242-b2c2-dd976aecd5cc.html?utm_campaign=blox&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;emci=fd5b465d-208d-ed11-9d7b-00224832e811&amp;emdi=a03988b1-208d-ed11-9d7b-00224832e811&amp;ceid=26137925\">Richmond Times-Dispatch<\/a>: \u201c<strong>Youngkin<\/strong> seeks additional $1 billion in individual, corporate tax cuts\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe governor\u2019s new tax plan would lower the top individual income tax rate from 5.75% to 5.5%, despite a recent state study that recommended moving in the opposite direction to make the state\u2019s income tax system fairer to Virginians who pay a higher share of their income in taxes than the wealthiest taxpayers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe governor wants to provide tax relief to businesses by cutting the corporate income tax rate from 6% to 5%.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Republican presidential hopefuls have railed against expanding Medicaid in their own states \u2014 leaving millions of Americans uninsured and forcing their constituents to pay exorbitant out-of-pocket costs to receive essential care. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/ron-desantis-medicaid-florida-uninsured_n_63d37fbde4b04d4d18e52a03\">HuffPost<\/a>: While Ron <strong>DeSantis<\/strong> Is Fighting Culture Wars, Millions Of Floridians Are Losing Their Health Care<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/meetthepressblog\/nikki-haley-stands-key-issues-rcna70838\">NBC News<\/a>: \u201c<strong>Haley<\/strong> opposed efforts to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act (South Carolina remains just one of 11 states that hasn\u2019t expanded Medicaid to allow more Americans to have health insurance).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/11\/us\/politics\/youngkin-virginia-governor-race.html\">New York Times<\/a>: \u201c<strong>Youngkin<\/strong> said it was \u2018a sad thing\u2019 that Virginia had expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Medicare and Medicaid\u2019s 58th anniversary, here\u2019s your reminder that MAGA Republicans are running on an extreme agenda to slash these essential programs that hardworking Americans and seniors rely on.
