In case you missed it: Donald Trump said the quiet part out loud and told Sean Hannity that he would be a dictator on day one if reelected. Trump also traded endorsements with high-profile Republicans who want to gut Medicare and Social Security.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the MAGA race to the bottom, the 2024 GOP field doubled down on their extremism: Nikki Haley argued that DeSantis\u2019s \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d bill didn\u2019t go far enough, both Haley and DeSantis refused to call Trump saying he\u2019d be a \u201cdictator on day one\u201d disqualifying, and floundering Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy resorted to Trump-endorsed conspiracy theories to boost his sinking poll numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Capitol Hill, House Republicans admitted that their baseless impeachment inquiry into President Biden is an excuse to manufacture a scandal to boost Trump. After having the third-shortest speakership in history, former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy announced that he\u2019ll be retiring from Congress at the end of December. As for the current speaker, more details about MAGA Mike Johnson\u2019s homophobic and conspiratorial record were revealed. Meanwhile, Senator Tommy Tuberville has \u201cno regrets\u201d about blocking hundreds of key military promotions and nominations in the name of anti-abortion extremism. Over in New Hampshire, Republicans filed a bill that would ban abortion before many women even know they\u2019re pregnant. It\u2019s been a malarkey-filled week, folks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Donald Trump said that would rule as a dictator on \u201cday one\u201d if reelected.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/05\/us\/politics\/trump-fox-news-abuse-power.html\">New York Times<\/a>: \u201cAnd even as Mr. Hannity tried to clarify that Mr. Trump had no intention of abusing his office, Mr. Trump did not state a clear aversion to the idea of authoritarian power. \u2018This guy, he says, \u201cYou\u2019re not going to be a dictator, are you?\u2019\u2019 Mr. Trump said, referring to Mr. Hannity. \u2018I said, \u201cNo, no, no \u2014 other than Day 1.\u201d We\u2019re closing the border. And we\u2019re drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I\u2019m not a dictator.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BidenHQ\/status\/1732427985758699833\">On MSNBC, Joe Scarborough<\/a>: \u201cIf any other politician in American history were asked the question, \u2018Are you going to be a dictator,\u2019 [they&#8217;d say] no. Donald Trump never answered it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2023\/12\/why-trump-refuses-to-deny-he-plans-to-become-a-dictator.html\">Jonathan Chait, New York Magazine<\/a>: \u201cThis exchange is best understood as Trump enjoying the idea of himself as dictator. Trump has always admired dictators and has longed to be granted the obsequious deference they are afforded. As president, his favorite moments were trips to places like North Korea, where he spoke admiringly about the way his counterparties were treated. (\u2018He\u2019s the head of the country,\u2019 Trump said of Kim Jong-un. \u2018And I mean, he\u2019s the strong head. Don\u2019t let anyone think anything different. \u2026 He speaks and his people sit up at attention. I want my people to do the same.\u2019)\u201d<br><strong><br>While parroting dictators, Trump is spelling out his second term plans to weaponize federal agencies and undermine our nation\u2019s rule of law.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/05\/us\/politics\/trump-2024-president-campaign.html\">New York Times<\/a>: \u201cDonald Trump\u2019s 2024 Campaign, in His Own Menacing Words\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/iqRdRkkywLA\">David Frum, MSNBC<\/a>: \u201cIf Donald Trump is elected again, I don\u2019t think people appreciate enough how much chaos there\u2019s going to be. The government is going to break down. We could be in a situation where the presidency just melts down under the weight of a president using the presidency to protect himself from his crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/MgniFoJwgC4\">Maggie Haberman, CNN<\/a>: \u201c[Donald Trump] is saying a number of things that he is planning. So, this is all from his own mouth, or from his close allies or his advisers. Donald Trump called Obamacare a disaster last night in Iowa after reiterating his calls to repeal it. You of course voted to repeal Obamacare when Trump was president. Do you think that this is a winning issue right now? Would you like to see another vote again?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graham: \u201cYeah. Good question. This is what we tried to do when Trump was president. Let\u2019s block grant the money.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2024 Republican candidates have refused to address New Hampshire Republicans\u2019 proposal for an extreme abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gencourt.state.nh.us\/bill_status\/legacy\/bs2016\/billText.aspx?id=1299&amp;txtFormat=html&amp;sy=2024\">New Hampshire House Bill 1248<\/a>: \u201cThis bill prohibits abortion, other than for a medical emergency, if the gestational age of the fetus is more than 15 days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/new-hampshire-15-day-abortion-ban_n_656f66dee4b0f3e5f44b124c\/amp\">HuffPost<\/a>: \u201cRepublicans in New Hampshire filed one of the most extreme abortion bans in the country on Tuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/new-hampshire-republicans-ban-abortion-15-days-1234911290\/\">Rolling Stone<\/a>: \u201cThe bill is effectively a total ban on abortion. The absolute earliest a woman can confirm she is pregnant is with a blood test 10 days after ovulation. But this proposed law does not ban abortion 15 days after ovulation \u2014 it bans abortion at 15 days <em>gestation,<\/em> counted from the first day of a woman\u2019s last menstrual cycle\u2026 which means it would ban abortion before some woman have even had conceived. The only proposed exception to the law is for a medical emergency.\u201d<strong><br>Nikki Haley is continuing her campaign to end Social Security and Medicare as we know them \u2014 essential programs America\u2019s seniors rely on.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/05\/politics\/nikki-haley-social-security-medicare-reform\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>: \u201cHaley has called for several changes to the nation\u2019s safety net programs, including increasing the age at which today\u2019s younger workers would become eligible for Social Security retirement benefits and limiting the growth of benefits the wealthy receive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNearly 67 million Americans have received monthly Social Security benefits this year, and more than 66 million people are enrolled in Medicare. Polling shows little support for major changes to the programs themselves to help shore up their finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA March CNN\/SSRS poll of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, for instance, found that 59% said it was \u2018essential\u2019 that the GOP nominee for president \u2018pledges to maintain Social Security and Medicare as they are.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/InsideWithPsaki\/status\/1731848442563936371?s=20\">Jen Psaki, MSNBC<\/a>: \u201c[Haley] wants to raise the retirement age for young people in particular, at a time when life expectancy in this country is dropping. \u2026 It\u2019s also important to dig into what she says she would actually do as president. You might find it isn\u2019t so moderate after all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>During this week\u2019s Republican debate, Nikki Haley claimed Ron DeSantis\u2019 cruel and unpopular \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d bill didn\u2019t go far enough.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BidenHQ\/status\/1732568483849019613\">Haley<\/a>: \u201c[DeSantis\u2019s] \u2018Don\u2019t Say Gay\u2019 bill didn\u2019t go far enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/20\/opinion\/dont-say-gay-bill-florida.html\">New York Times<\/a>: DeSantis\u2019s legislation will \u201chave a chilling effect on what students and teachers think they can say about sexual orientation and gender identity. Just as dangerously, scientific research has linked the gag order\u2019s implicit message of exclusion, shame and unworthiness to tangible health harms for L.G.B.T.Q. youth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/politics\/nikki-haley-dont-say-gay\">The Advocate<\/a>: \u201cStumping for votes in her long-shot bid for the Republican 2024 presidential nomination, former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley is trying to prove she&#8217;s just as anti-LGBTQ+ as Florida governor Ron DeSantis &#8230; Haley&#8217;s record on LGBTQ+ issues is abysmal. As noted by GLAAD, Haley has said President Joe Biden\u2019s support of transgender rights will destroy women\u2019s sports \u2026 She also opposed marriage equality as both South Carolina state representative and governor. Additionally, she rejected matching funds for a program offering HIV medication to lower-income patients.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vivek Ramaswamy used Wednesday\u2019s debate to prove he\u2019s a Trump loyalist who is hellbent on repeating false claims about the January 6 insurrection.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/merica\/status\/1732822981997441482?s=20\">Dan Merica<\/a>: \u201cSinking In Polls, Vivek Ramaswamy Turns To Right Wing Conspiracy Theories\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRamaswamy attempted to use conspiracy theories on Wednesday night as a defibrillator to resuscitate his presidential bid.\u201d<br><a href=\"https:\/\/themessenger.com\/politics\/sinking-in-polls-ramaswamy-turns-to-right-wing-conspiracy-theories\">The Messenger<\/a>: \u201cThe bombastic businessman-turned-politician entered the fourth debate on Wednesday night a diminished figure, seen as a gadfly by those on stage, a worrying joke to many top Republican operatives, and someone whose poll numbers have done nothing but sink since that first debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFaced with this unenviable position of his own making, Ramaswamy turned to one of his reliable sources of Republican support, the world of right-wing conspiracy theories, using his platform to sound more like someone posting on right-wing message boards than a candidate for president.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/who-are-these-gop-debates-actually-for\">Vanity Fair<\/a>: \u201cAnd Ramaswamy, frantically clinging to his undeserved relevance, went into all-out crank mode\u2014confidently theorizing that the January 6 attack was an \u2018inside job,\u2019 that climate change is a \u2018hoax,\u2019 and that the \u2018Great Replacement\u2019 theory is not some racist paranoia, but a \u2018basic statement of the Democratic Party platform.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MAGA Republicans brazenly said the quiet part out loud when they admitted their baseless impeachment sham is a political stunt designed to give Trump \u201cammo\u201d in 2024.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/12\/04\/republican-impeach-joe-biden-vote\/71803686007\/#:~:text=If%20Trump%2C%20who%20has%20been,Biden%20has%20also%20been%20impeached.\">USA Today<\/a>: \u201cRep. Troy Nehls, R-Texas, one of Trump\u2019s most vocal supporters in the House, has not shied away from pushing for Biden\u2019s impeachment in part to play politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf Trump, who has been impeached twice, is the 2024 Republican nominee, Nehls said he wants to give Trump \u2018a little bit of ammo to fire back\u2019 and say Biden has also been impeached.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/themessenger.com\/politics\/gingrich-warns-that-gop-votes-against-impeachment-will-guarantee-primary-challenges\">The Messenger<\/a>: \u201cFormer GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Monday suggested moderate Republicans may go along with a new attempt to launch a presidential impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden because they could face primary threats if they don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2019If you\u2019re a Republican, do you really want to guarantee a primary opponent by voting against looking into [Biden]?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Senator Tommy Tuberville may have finally begun to retreat in his military blockade, but he made it clear that he has \u201cno regrets\u201d about blocking hundreds of key military promotions and nominations in the name of anti-abortion extremism.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2023\/12\/05\/congress\/tuberville-drops-military-holds-00130149\">Politico<\/a>: \u201cTuberville dropped most of his months-long holds earlier on Tuesday, backing down from his vow to block them until the Pentagon changes an internal abortion travel policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andrewdesiderio\/status\/1732104773103501809?t=AS_9Em6lWUsoQ0WyLZq4ig\">Andrew Desidero, Punchbowl News<\/a>: \u201cTUBERVILLE concedes he lost &amp; got nothing in return: \u2018We didn\u2019t get the win that we wanted. We\u2019ve still got the bad [abortion] policy. We tried to stand up for the taxpayers\u2026\u2019 But Tuberville tells me he has no regrets about any of this\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/07\/20\/tuberville-military-desantis-abortion-00107289\">Politico<\/a>: \u201cMilitary leaders and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have blasted Tuberville, saying that the hold harms national security and military readiness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>New reporting uncovered that MAGA Mike Johnson wrote the foreword for a conspiracy-ridden and homophobic book last year \u2014 and he has doubled down on his support for the book and its contents on both his podcast and social media platforms.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/01\/politics\/kfile-mike-johnson-conspiracy-theories-homophobic-slurs\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>: \u201cSpeaker of the House Mike Johnson wrote the foreword and publicly promoted a 2022 book that spread baseless and discredited conspiracy theories and used derogatory homophobic insults.\u201d<br>\u201cJohnson\u2019s endorsement of the book extends beyond the foreword: In 2022, he actively promoted the book on his public social media platforms and even dedicated an episode of his podcast he co-hosts with his wife to hosting McKay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring the podcast episode, Johnson expressed his belief in the book, stating, \u2018I obviously believe in the product, or I wouldn\u2019t have written the foreword. So I endorse the work.\u2019\u201d<br><br>\u201cThe book denies that carbon dioxide is linked to climate change and frequently mocks the climate crisis as \u2018hysteria.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe book targets and taunts prominent Democratic officials, including calling Interior Secretary Deb Haaland \u2018half oppressed\u2019 because her mother is Native American and father is of Norwegian descent and writes that former President Barack Obama\u2019s \u2018chief selling point was that he was black.\u2019<br>\u201cMcKay also adds that the late Arizona Sen. John McCain, a frequent foe of Donald Trump, used his time as a prisoner of war in Vietnam \u2018as a political get-out-of-jail-free card.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kevin McCarthy announced his McExit from Congress, leaving behind a failed legacy as puppet to Donald Trump and a cog in the MAGA machine trying to destroy democracy.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2023\/01\/kevin-mccarthy-tries-to-save-speaker-bid-on-january-6-anniversary\">Vanity Fair<\/a>: \u201cKevin McCarthy cast a vote that should forever define his legacy. Along with 138 of his Republican colleagues in the House, and eight more in the Senate, the then-minority leader voted against certifying the election results on January 6, 2021\u2014even after armed Donald Trump supporters besieged the Capitol to disrupt that very process. It was a shameful act, and one that belied his behind-the-scenes exhortations that the former president put a stop to the chaos and violence. But McCarthy did it anyway\u2014voted against democracy, voted against impeachment, and truckled to Trump at Mar-a-Lago weeks after the Capitol attack\u2014for the same reason he does everything: ambition.\u201d<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2023\/01\/kevin-mccarthy-trump-house-speaker-congress\/672630\/\">The Atlantic<\/a>: \u201cKevin McCarthy\u2019s Loyalty to Trump Got Him Nothing\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[McCarthy] quickly moved to mend the breach [after January 6], flying to Mar-a-Lago in late January 2021 to prostrate himself. \u2026 Over the next two years, he remained close to Trump, and courted the most hard-core Trump supporters. Faced with the challenge of how to handle Marjorie Taylor Greene, the new representative with a slate of appalling statements and passionate conservative support, McCarthy chose to only lightly castigate and then align with Greene.
