In case you missed it: Donald Trump\u2019s Supreme Court picks led to the devastating Alabama Supreme Court IVF ruling; MAGA Mike Johnson tried to walk back his extreme IVF agenda despite co-sponsoring the Life of Concept Act with NO exceptions for IVF; Senate Republicans proved they\u2019re all hat and no cattle by stopping an IVF protection bill from getting a vote; and Trump expressed support for a national abortion ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump also traveled to the border and reminded the American people about his role in blocking the bipartisan border bill \u2013&nbsp;while new polling has found the border deal Trump killed is popular among all Americans; Trump continued to campaign on racist tropes toward Black Americans <em>in front of Black voters <\/em>*during* Black History Month; Trump\u2019s takeover of the RNC became imminent with RNC chair Ronna McDaniel\u2019s official resignation; the Michigan GOP continues to be an active dumpster fire as it scrambles to select delegates in the midst of a messy leadership feud; and House Republican Maria Salazar once again took credit for district funding that she voted against.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Americans trying to start a family are facing a horrifying reality because of Donald Trump \u2014&nbsp; whose hand-picked Supreme Court justices provided the deciding votes to overturn <\/strong><strong><em>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/strong><strong> and set the stage for Alabama\u2019s Supreme Court ruling that halted IVF treatment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/alabama-ivf-legislation-0506c070085407b8983bf55409b1465c\">Associated Press<\/a>: \u201cAlabama IVF patients describe heartbreak, anger after ruling\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn vitro fertilization patients in Alabama described postponed pregnancies, canceled appointments and the uncertainty surrounding if they will be able to access frozen embryos already created in the hopes of growing their families.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/25\/us\/politics\/alabama-ivf-ruling-republicans-democrats.html\">New York Times<\/a>: \u201c[The Alabama ruling was] made possible by the Supreme Court\u2019s overturning of Roe v. Wade in its 2022 <em>Dobbs<\/em> decision, which was a result of Mr. Trump\u2019s appointment of three justices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BidenHQ\/status\/1745277154236260693\">Trump<\/a>: \u201cFor 54 years they were trying to get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/roe-v-wade\"><em>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/a> terminated, and I did it, and I\u2019m proud to have done it. \u2026 Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MAGA Mike Johnson said he wants to protect IVF from anti-choice extremists like \u2026 Mike Johnson.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/post\/179436\/hypocrite-mike-johnson-ivf-protections-alabama\">The New Republic<\/a>: \u201cWatch: Mike Johnson Desperately Tries to Avoid Talking About IVF\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLike many other anti-abortion lawmakers, Johnson has a long record of arguing that life begins \u201cfrom the moment of fertilization.\u201d And that\u2019s the exact same logic the Alabama Supreme Court used when ruling that even embryos created through in-vitro fertilization are protected under the Wrongful Death of a Minor Act.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJohnson has used this logic to oppose nearly every form of reproductive rights, including contraception. Along with most other Republicans in the House, Johnson has also co-sponsored the Life at Conception Act, which would grant legal personhood to fertilized eggs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/house-republicans-life-at-conception-ivf-exception-2024-2?utm_source=copy-link&amp;utm_campaign=business-sf&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=topbar\">Business Insider<\/a>: \u201cMost House Republicans have cosponsored a bill declaring that life begins from the moment of conception, a position under increased scrutiny after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are \u2018unborn children.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis Congress, 125 House Republicans \u2014 including Speaker Mike Johnson \u2014 have cosponsored the \u2018Life at Conception Act,\u2019 which states that the term \u2018human being\u2019 includes \u2018all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning, or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Senate Republicans blocked basic protections for IVF as fundamental reproductive freedoms are being stripped away across the country because of Trump and his MAGA allies.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congress-ivf-access-abortion-alabama-bill-ruling-7f68248f36900d4583d9b181f3b4e380\">Associated Press<\/a>: \u201cRepublicans block Senate bill to protect nationwide access to IVF treatments\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStill, this is the second time Republicans have blocked Duckworth\u2019s bill. By Bringing it up again, Democrats said they are challenging GOP senators to display real support for IVF access after many this week issued statements criticizing the Alabama ruling. Democrats held the Senate floor for 45 minutes Wednesday with a series of speeches deriding the overturn of Roe v. Wade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trump, who claims he is \u201con the side of women,\u201d doubled down on his commitment to a national abortion ban this week.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4499352-trump-on-abortion-limits-im-hearing-about-15-weeks-i-havent-decided-yet\/\">The Hill<\/a>: \u201cTrump on abortion limits: \u2018I\u2019m hearing about 15 weeks. I haven\u2019t decided yet\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/trump-national-abortion-ban-15-weeks-1234978829\/\">Rolling Stone<\/a>: \u201cTrump Floats National Abortion Ban After Claiming He&#8217;s \u2018On the Side of Women\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen discussing support for in vitro fertilization (which GOP lawmakers claimed to support, then blocked a bill this week to protect IVF access nationwide), Trump insisted \u2018we\u2019re on the side of women.\u2019 Shortly after his declaration, the former president told host Sean Hannity, \u2018More and more I\u2019m hearing about 15 weeks. I haven\u2019t decided yet.\u2019 Trump continued, \u2018The number 15 is mentioned. I haven\u2019t agreed to any number. I\u2019m going to see.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trump\u2019s visit to Texas spotlighted the fact he continues to choose chaos over solutions \u2014&nbsp; after he killed a bipartisan deal that would secure the border.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/02\/06\/biden-makes-last-ditch-pitch-for-congress-to-pass-border-bill-00139841\">Politico<\/a>: \u201cRepublicans are \u2018caving\u2019 \u2014 Biden blames Trump as border deal falters\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/07\/politics\/senate-border-ukraine-israel-aid-vote\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>: \u201cSenate Republicans block bipartisan border deal and foreign aid package following months of negotiations\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSenate Republicans blocked a major bipartisan border deal and foreign aid package with assistance for Ukraine and Israel in a key vote on Wednesday amid a torrent of attacks on the bill by former President Donald Trump and top House Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDemocrats have expressed outrage at Republicans for lining up in opposition to the border deal, arguing that they cannot be trusted as negotiating partners and saying that they are bowing to pressure from Trump to keep the border in the political spotlight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, new polling shows that the majority of Americans support the bipartisan legislation that Trump killed to secure the border.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/navigatorresearch.org\/two-in-three-americans-support-the-bipartisan-immigration-deal\/\">Navigator Research<\/a>: \u201cTwo in Three Americans Support the Bipartisan Immigration Deal\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTwo in three Americans supported the bipartisan immigration deal reached in the Senate, but that will not be taken up for a vote in the House. \u2026 On the Republican approach to the recent immigration package, Americans\u2019 greatest concerns are that they are focused on the wrong issues and playing politics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thirdway.org\/polling\/owning-the-immigration-deal?utm_source=Pardot&amp;utm_medium=email\">Third Way<\/a>: \u201cVoters like the deal, both as a whole and individual components. \u2026 Across the board, both swing and base voters are remarkably aligned in favor of the big security components of the deal. It\u2019s not just the tough on the border policies that voters like\u2014they also understand that a major piece of restoring order must be providing orderly pathways for people to come to this country in other ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trump peddled racist tropes and jokes about Black Americans for the umpteenth time \u2014 in front of Black voters during Black History Month.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BidenHQ\/status\/1761231496889708961\">Trump, claiming the Black community \u201cembraced\u201d him because he was indicted on criminal charges<\/a>: \u201cYou see Black people walking around with my mugshot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BidenHQ\/status\/1761226715542560851?s=20\">Trump<\/a>: \u201cWould you rather have the Black president or the white president? \u2026 I think they want the white guy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BidenHQ\/status\/1761219165220647288\">claimed<\/a> he knows Black people because they built his buildings.<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BidenHQ\/status\/1761214656687865928?s=20\">Trump<\/a>: \u201cThese lights are so bright in my eyes that I can&#8217;t see too many people out there. &#8230; I can only see the Black ones. I can&#8217;t see any white ones, you see. Maria Salazar (R-Fla.) this month celebrated delivering $1.4 million to a children\u2019s hospital in her district, even attending a photo op where she handed over massive checks to leadership and staff at the Nicklaus Children\u2019s Hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cExcept Salazar voted against the bill that provided this money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe took credit for securing this money on Twitter, too, and shared a photo of herself handing over the big checks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut as her own press release states, this money came from the Fiscal Year 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act \u2015 a bill she opposed. Virtually every House Republican voted against this bill, which provided $1.7 trillion to fund the federal government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s strange is that Salazar is not just taking credit for money that she voted against, she openly cites where this funding came from \u2014 and it\u2019s very easy to look up her vote on this bill.
