Hint: they can\u2019t. MAGA extremists in Congress are joining Donald Trump in pushing for a nationwide ban on abortion, as they back House legislation that would threaten IVF access and they\u2019ve blocked essential protections for IVF on the floor of the Senate. The American people won\u2019t buy the MAGA lies \u2013 they know that their most basic freedoms are at risk \u2013 including the ability to start and grow a family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NEW: Extreme Republicans are struggling to explain how they can support IVF despite backing the Life at Conception Act, which could rip away IVF access from families nationwide.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/republicans-struggle-to-explain-away-their-hypocrisy-on-ivf\">Daily Beast<\/a>: <strong>\u201cRepublicans Struggle to Explain Away Their Hypocrisy on IVF\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos could be considered children, it put an unpopular target on the most effective fertility treatment in the country. It also put a target on the backs of Republicans, with many GOP politicians suddenly facing questions about their long-held beliefs about when life begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSquaring support for in vitro fertilization with the general GOP position\u2014that life begins at conception\u2014is hard enough. But many Republicans, from Donald Trump to Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), rushed to do just that in the aftermath of the Alabama ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cAnd yet, for some GOP lawmakers, there\u2019s a reason why supporting IVF may come off as disingenuous: they\u2019re cosponsors of a bill, \u2018The Life at Conception Act,\u2019 that would vow to protect \u2018all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cIf you ask these Republicans how they square their newfound public support for IVF with their support for a measure that would undermine IVF, you\u2019ll get some tortured\u2014though, at times, candid\u2014answers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018With difficulty,\u2019 is how Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) responded last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf these GOP lawmakers are relying on medical science to guide their opinions, it\u2019s clear many haven\u2019t done much research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut therein lies one of the ironies of lawmakers making health decisions. <strong>These Republicans aren\u2019t deferring to doctors to make law; they\u2019re making sweeping statements about when life begins\u2014and then trying to draft laws that conform to those beliefs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor fertility expert Dr. Eve Feinberg\u2014an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University\u2019s Feinberg School of Medicine\u2014legislation that assigns personhood to embryos is \u2018very problematic for IVF.\u2019 \u2026 But <strong>time and again, Republicans didn\u2019t see any issue with their bill and their sudden support for IVF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThere are 124 House Republicans who have signed on to the Life at Conception Act\u2014including Speaker Johnson. The bill has become the subject of intense scrutiny after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that embryos created by IVF are legally \u2018children.\u2019 \u2026 Concerns about clinics being held liable for damage done to the embryos under the Wrongful Death of a Minor Act have had a chilling effect; several Alabama IVF providers have already discontinued the treatment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe logic of the Alabama Supreme Court decision underpins the Life at Conception Act. Embryos, supporters argue, are humans and should be treated as such under the law.<strong> If the Life at Conception Act passed, experts say it could have massive ramifications for IVF access nationwide.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDemocrats have also proposed their own IVF safeguards. Rep. Susan Wild (D-PA) introduced a bill to protect IVF in January. But <strong>despite the supposed GOP support for IVF, of the bill\u2019s 102 sponsors, not one is a Republican at the moment.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cNot everyone in the GOP is going for moderation. Some Republican lawmakers were quite forthcoming about their concerns with\u2014even outright opposition to\u2014IVF.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Senate Republicans blocked basic protections for IVF, while 125 House Republicans have cosponsored the Life at Conception Act.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congress-ivf-access-abortion-alabama-bill-ruling-7f68248f36900d4583d9b181f3b4e380\">Associated Press<\/a>: <strong>\u201cRepublicans block Senate bill to protect nationwide access to IVF treatments\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/house-republicans-life-at-conception-ivf-exception-2024-2?utm_source=copy-link&amp;utm_campaign=business-sf&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=topbar\">Business Insider<\/a>: \u201cMost House Republicans have cosponsored a bill declaring that life begins from the moment of conception, a position under increased scrutiny after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are \u2018unborn children.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThis Congress, 125 House Republicans \u2014 including Speaker Mike Johnson \u2014 have cosponsored the \u2018Life at Conception Act,\u2019<\/strong> which states that the term \u2018human being\u2019 includes \u2018all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning, or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThe bill does not include any exception for in vitro fertilization (IVF), a reproductive treatment that allows mothers to fertilize several eggs outside the womb in order to increase the chances of a viable pregnancy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/personhood-bills-ivf-restrictions-alabama-rcna140228\">NBC News<\/a>: \u201cBut with the landmark Roe ruling protecting those rights gone, efforts by conservative lawmakers and judges to advance <strong>fetal personhood bills pose a real threat to some fertility treatments, including IVF<\/strong>, reproductive rights advocates say.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/02\/27\/republicans-alabama-ivf-ruling-00143391\">Politico<\/a>: \u201cDozens of congressional Republicans have signed onto so-called personhood legislation with <strong>no carve-out for embryos in clinics, which, if enacted, would upend how the procedure is practiced in the United States.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Donald Trump made possible the Alabama Supreme Court decision that is stopping IVF treatment \u2013&nbsp;and he is still bragging about his role in overturning <\/strong><strong><em>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/strong><strong> and demanding credit for extreme abortion bans across the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/25\/us\/politics\/alabama-ivf-ruling-republicans-democrats.html\">New York Times<\/a>: <strong>\u201c[The Alabama ruling was] made possible by the Supreme Court\u2019s overturning of Roe v. Wade in its 2022 Dobbs decision, which was a result of Mr. Trump\u2019s appointment of three justices.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/24\/health\/alabama-ivf-roe-v-wade\/index.html#:~:text=That%20decision%20is%20the%20first,Roe%20v.%20Wade%20in%202022.\">CNN<\/a>: <strong>\u201cHow the reversal of Roe v. Wade led to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that frozen embryos are children\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BidenHQ\/status\/1745277154236260693\">Trump<\/a>: \u201cFor 54 years they were trying to get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/roe-v-wade\"><em>Roe v.
