Trump once again put himself first by urging his MAGA minions to play political games, and congressional Republicans were happy to play along. While extreme MAGA Republicans are all talk and no action on the border, President Biden and Democrats are working across the aisle to provide solutions that will improve border security, fix our immigration system, and make our country safer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Katie Britt put Donald Trump ahead of the American people by heeding his call to kill the bipartisan border deal, despite previously calling for boosting border security.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/03\/07\/katie-britt-republican-state-of-the-union\/\">Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cThough [Britt] helped negotiate a bipartisan border security deal, she ultimately voted against it after Trump signaled to congressional Republicans that no immigration policy should pass during the election year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/missouriindependent.com\/2024\/02\/05\/intense-opposition-to-u-s-senate-immigration-deal-quickly-emerges\/\">Missouri Independent<\/a>: <strong>\u201cAlabama\u2019s GOP Sen. Republicans Don\u2019t Care\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/06\/politics\/trump-republicans-immigration\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>: <strong>\u201cThe border compromise would represent a dramatic change of immigration law on lines many Republicans have long supported.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2024\/2\/7\/24064001\/border-crisis-immigration-reality-explained-mayorkas-impeachment\">Vox<\/a>: \u201cTrump made this clear when he reportedly urged Republicans in Congress to turn against the bipartisan Senate border security bill scheduled for a vote Wednesday so that he could <strong>keep the issue alive through the presidential election.<\/strong> His supporters have largely fallen in line.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Polling shows that two-thirds of Americans support the bipartisan border security deal that Trump directed MAGA Republicans to reject.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/navigatorresearch.org\/two-in-three-americans-support-the-bipartisan-immigration-deal\/\">Navigator Research<\/a>: <strong>\u201cTwo in Three Americans Support the Bipartisan Immigration Deal\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cTwo in three Americans supported the bipartisan immigration deal reached in the Senate, but that will not be taken up for a vote in the House\u2026 On the Republican approach to the recent immigration package, Americans\u2019 greatest concerns are that they are focused on the wrong issues and playing politics.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe immigration deal earns support across party lines, including among three in four Republicans (net +58; 74 percent support \u201316 percent oppose), two in three independents (net +48; 64 percent support \u2013 16 percent oppose), and three in five Democrats (net +32; 59 percent support \u2013 27 percent oppose).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thirdway.org\/polling\/owning-the-immigration-deal?utm_source=Pardot&amp;utm_medium=email\">Third Way<\/a>: <strong>\u201cVoters like the deal, both as a whole and individual components\u2026 <\/strong>Across the board, both swing and base voters are remarkably aligned in favor of the big security components of the deal\u2026 It\u2019s not just the tough on the border policies that voters like\u2014they also understand that a major piece of restoring order must be providing orderly pathways for people to come to this country in other ways.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Speaker MAGA Mike Johnson called the bipartisan border security bill \u201c<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/4431375-speaker-johnson-senate-border-deal-dead-on-arrival-in-house\/#:~:text=Speaker%20Mike%20Johnson%20(R%2DLa,about%20its%20terms%20are%20true.\"><strong>dead on arrival<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u201d \u2013&nbsp;despite repeatedly calling for action to secure the border and saying it \u201cis a job for Congress.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mikejohnson.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=1276\">Johnson<\/a>: <strong>\u201cOur immigration system is broken. Reforming that system is a job for Congress.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.speaker.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2-FINAL-SMJ-Final-WH-Letter-12.21.23.pdf\">Johnson<\/a>: \u201cThe crisis at our southern border has deteriorated to such an extent that <strong>significant action can wait no longer.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/stories\/2024\/jan\/17\/johnson-digs-in-against-border-deal-to-unlock-ukra\/\">Johnson<\/a>: \u201cI do think<strong> it\u2019s past time to secure the border.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Multiple House Republicans have warned their own colleagues against politicizing border security and delaying taking action.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.majoritywhip.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=350\">Tom Emmer<\/a>: <strong>\u201cWhy does it have to be a political issue when it&#8217;s the right thing to do to seal our own border and make sure that good people that want to come here for the right reasons are able to come here?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/roy.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/roy.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/roy_dear-colleague_1.2.24_final.pdf\">Chip Roy<\/a>: <strong>\u201cIt\u2019s time to act with urgency. Urgency means not waiting for the next election.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbtx.com\/2024\/01\/29\/congressman-michael-mccaul-talks-border-security-brazos-valley-this-morning\/\">Michael McCaul<\/a>: \u201cI think [the border] is a very urgent problem. <strong>We can\u2019t wait a year.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepBryanSteil\/status\/1738624485702480002?s=20\">Bryan Steil<\/a>: <strong>\u201c<\/strong>I\u2019m less concerned about who gets the win other than making sure the American people win, and<strong> the American people win if we truly secure the US-Mexico border.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/01\/23\/1226406658\/if-the-border-deal-gets-through-senate-republicans-it-could-still-fail-in-the-ho\">Patrick McHenry<\/a>: <strong>\u201cWe have bipartisan support\u2026 Take the moment, man.<\/strong> Take the policy win.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mkraju\/status\/1753123998232146004\">Dan Crenshaw<\/a>: \u201cI\u2019m extremely disappointed in the very strange maneuvering by many on the right to torpedo a potential border reform bill\u2026 <strong>It would be a pretty unacceptable dereliction of [their] duty.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Both parties talked about border security in last month\u2019s NY-03 special election, but Democrat Tom Suozzi won because Democrats have a plan while Republicans are to blame for refusing to secure the border.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/five-takeaways-new-yorks-special-election-replace-george-santos-rcna138466\">NBC News<\/a>: \u201c<strong>Republicans went all-in on the issue of immigration as their ticket to victory \u2014 and fell short.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/tom-suozzi-wins-special-election_n_65cbb292e4b065628a60ffa9\">HuffPost<\/a>: <strong>\u201cSuozzi affirmed his commitment to border security in two TV ads, and in the final days of the campaign, slammed Pilip for opposing a bipartisan Senate deal to shore up the border after Trump warned that it would benefit Biden.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/14\/nyregion\/democrats-house-suozzi-biden.html\">New York Times<\/a>: <strong>\u201cWhen Ms. Pilip rejected a bipartisan Senate deal to boost deportations and fortify the border, Mr. Suozzi turned the tables, arguing that she was putting base politics above national security.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/ny-special-election-santos-02-13-24\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>: <strong>\u201cMany voters in the swing district pointed to immigration as a top issue, <\/strong>something that could also be true for voters across the country during this year\u2019s general election\u2026 Suozzi argued that he was the only person offering solutions in the race and criticized some Republicans in Congress for killing a bipartisan deal on the border.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/elections\/immigration-new-york-congress-george-santos-2734ee06\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>: <strong>\u201cDemocrat Tom Suozzi won a special election Tuesday on Long Island, flipping a seat in Congress from the GOP and sending a signal that his party can withstand Republican attacks on immigration in swing districts far from the border.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/02\/14\/1231301104\/new-york-special-election-results-santos-suozzi-pilip\">NPR<\/a>: <strong>\u201cThis race was dominated by GOP attacks on immigration.<\/strong> Republicans spent more than $8 million on campaign ads in this race, a huge number for a special congressional election. They hammered Democrat Tom Suozzi on immigration on the airwaves.
