As Donald Trump\u2019s VP contenders stand by his dangerous rhetoric and threats to our democracy, <\/em>DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor every one of convicted felon Donald Trump\u2019s VP contenders, our democracy and the rule of law takes a backseat to Trump and his MAGA extremism. Here\u2019s what they are defending: Trump\u2019s baseless election denialism, plans to be a dictator on \u2018day one\u2019, and promises to pardon the insurrectionists he rallied to attack the Capitol on January 6. All of Trump\u2019s potential running mates are willing to whitewash Trump\u2019s anti-democratic extremism just to chase a spot on his ticket, but the American people won\u2019t stand for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Election denialism is a litmus test in Trump\u2019s MAGA veepstakes, and VP contenders are bending over backwards to push his lies and refuse to commit to accepting this November\u2019s election results.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News<\/a>: \u201cBurgum<\/strong>, like other contenders, has declined to comment on whether he would accept the 2024 election results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HuffPost<\/a>: \u201c[J.D. Vance<\/strong>] said he would accept a Biden win only if he considered the election to be legitimate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cSenator Marco Rubio<\/strong> of Florida, who has been floated as a possible running mate for former President Donald J. Trump, on Sunday refused to commit to accepting the results of the 2024 presidential election and repeated conspiracy theories about the 2020 election.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cSen. Tim Scott<\/strong> (R-S.C.) was pressed at least six times in a TV interview Sunday on whether he would accept this November\u2019s results. He repeatedly declined to do so\u2026 He continued to evade the question even as the interviewer, NBC News\u2019s Kristen Welker, reminded him that a \u2018hallmark of our democracy is that both candidates agree to a peaceful transfer of power.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News<\/a>: \u201cIn an appearance on NBC News\u2019 \u2018Meet the Press\u2019 in January, Stefanik<\/strong> declined to commit to accepting the 2024 election results. \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laura Coates, CNN<\/a>: \u201cWill you accept the results of the 2024 election regardless of who wins, yes or no?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ben Carson<\/strong>: \u201cI will accept the results if it\u2019s done in a fair and transparent way\u2026 let me put it this way: In the 2020 election, there were a lot of irregularities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abby Phillip, CNN<\/a>: \u201cIf Donald Trump loses the election in 2024, will you accept the results of that election?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Byron Donalds<\/strong>: \u201cMy answer has been very clear on this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josh Meny, 2 News Nevada<\/a>: \u201cDo you have any regrets about picking Mike Pence as your vice president? And what will you do differently this time around when you\u2019re vetting your VP?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump: \u201cMike did a good job until the end when he didn’t have the courage to do what you have to do. \u2026 if he did that, I believe you would have had different election results.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News<\/a>: \u201cNone of these potential vice presidential picks have committed to accepting the 2024 election results, whether Trump wins or loses.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cTop Republicans, led by Trump, refuse to commit to accept 2024 election results\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe question has become something of a litmus test, particularly among the long list of possible running mates for Trump. \u2026<\/strong> The GOP\u2019s desire to appease Trump\u2019s fixation on 2020 now appears to loom over his search for a running mate.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Axios<\/a>: \u201cTrump and his allies will want a VP pick that is more willing to comply with the former president’s wishes<\/strong>, which former Vice President Pence rejected by certifying the 2020 results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s potential running mates have also downplayed his role in the January 6 insurrection and whitewashed the violence of that day.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hill<\/a>: \u201cJD Vance<\/strong> says he is \u2018skeptical\u2019 Pence\u2019s life was in danger on Jan. 6\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newsweek<\/a>: \u201c\u2018There was no way they were going to overthrow the government,\u2019 said Rubio<\/strong>. \u2026 \u2018I also do not think people should be misled to think this somehow was on the verge of overthrowing the government.\u2019 Rubio also explained another reason why the events of January 6 should not be considered an insurrection. That was because Congress’ certification of Joe Biden’s win in the 2020 presidential election eventually resumed after protesters broke into the Capitol building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
