MAGA Republicans stooped to new lows this week with their extremism, hypocrisy, chaos, and \u2014 as President Biden would call it \u2014 malarkey. In case you missed it: Donald Trump lied more than twenty times during his speech at the Republican National Convention; Project 2025 got their preferred candidate for vice president in JD Vance; new reporting showed Vance\u2019s extensive (and extreme) anti-choice record; multiple people with Project 2025 ties spoke at the RNC; the RNC welcomed convicted criminals with open arms to their convention; and MAGA Republicans abandoned their promised national \u201cunity\u201d at the RNC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump lied more than twenty times during his speech at the Republican National Convention.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cFormer President Donald Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday with the most dishonest speech of the four-day Republican National Convention, making more than 20 false claims by CNN\u2019s count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany of the false claims were ones Trump has made before, some of them for years. They spanned a wide variety of topics, including the economy, immigration, crime, foreign policy and elections. Some of them were wild lies, others smaller exaggerations. Some were in his prepared text (like the absurd claim that he left the Biden administration a world at peace), while he ad-libbed others (such as his usual lies that Democrats cheated in the 2020 election and that the US is experiencing the worst inflation it has ever had).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump picked ultra-MAGA extremist JD Vance as his running mate.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jaime Harrison<\/a>: \u201cVance embodies MAGA \u2013 with an out-of-touch extreme agenda and plans to help Trump force his Project 2025 agenda on the American people. Vance has championed and enabled Trump\u2019s worst policies for years \u2013 from a national abortion ban, to whitewashing January 6, to railing against Social Security and Medicare. Let\u2019s be clear: A Trump-Vance ticket would undermine our democracy, our freedoms, and our future. There is so much on the line, and it\u2019s more important than ever that we reelect President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris this November.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project 2025 celebrated when Trump chose their ally Vance \u2014 the guy they were \u201creally rooting\u201d for.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New Republic<\/a>: <\/strong>\u201cProject 2025 Leader Is Overjoyed by Trump\u2019s Vice Presidential Pick\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nick Corasaniti, New York Times<\/a>: \u201c[Kevin Roberts] reacted to the news [of Vance\u2019s VP selection] \u2018with a broad smile on my face\u2019 and said that \u2018privately, we were really rooting for him.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gram Slattery, Reuters<\/a>: \u201cVance is very close to Heritage and even wrote the forward for a book from the think tank\u2019s president. Project 2025 is of course organized by Heritage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vox<\/a>: \u201cKevin Roberts, the president of the right-wing Heritage Foundation and the driving force behind Project 2025, told Ward that \u2018[Vance] is absolutely going to be one of the leaders \u2014 if not the leader \u2014 of our movement.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New reporting shows Vance wants abortion to be \u201cillegal nationally\u201d and is open to stopping women from crossing state lines to get reproductive care.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cJD Vance said in 2022 he \u2018would like abortion to be illegal nationally\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018I certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally,\u2019 Vance said in January 2022 on a podcast when running for Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDuring a podcast interview in January 2022, then-candidate JD Vance said he \u2018certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally\u2019 and was \u2018sympathetic\u2019 to the view that a national ban was necessary to stop women from traveling across states to obtain an abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cVance urged DOJ to enforce Comstock Act, crack down on abortion pills\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ProPublica<\/a>: \u201cHe argued that conservatives needed to take action against corporations that, say, defended abortion rights or punished employees who spoke out against abortion access. \u2018If we\u2019re unwilling to make companies that are taking the side of the left in the culture wars feel real economic pain, then we\u2019re not serious about winning the culture war,\u2019 he said.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project 2025 authors Tom Homan and Peter Navarro, Project 2025 advisory board member Ric Grenell, and Project 2025 enthusiast JD Vance all spoke at the RNC.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cProject 2025\u2019s proposals for reforming the country\u2019s immigration laws appear heavily influenced by those who helped execute Trump\u2019s early enforcement measures. Former acting US Customs and Border Protection chief Mark Morgan and former Immigration and Customs Enforcement chief Tom Homan \u2013 the faces of Trump\u2019s polarizing policies \u2013 contributed to the project, as did Kathy Nuebel Kovarik, one of the policy advisers pushing to end certain immigrant protections behind the scenes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

E&E News<\/a>: \u201c[The authors of Project 2025 include] former Trump Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson and former Trump White House aide Peter Navarro, who\u2019s serving in federal prison after he was convicted of contempt of Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Advocate<\/a>: \u201cGrenell will be special adviser for national security and foreign policy at the [Project 2025 advisory board member<\/a>] American Center for Law and Justice, based in Washington, D.C.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance<\/a>: \u201cI\u2019ve reviewed a lot of [Project 2025]. There are some good ideas in there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Trump pledged to pardon January 6 insurrectionists, the RNC welcomed convicted criminals to their convention with open arms.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPaul Manafort, Trump\u2019s 2016 campaign chairman was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison in 2019 as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 election.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MAGA Republicans promised national \u201cunity\u201d at the RNC \u2013 it didn\u2019t last long.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
