As Iowa\u2019s draconian six week abortion ban \u2014 made possible by Donald Trump \u2014 goes into effect today, the Trump-Vance ticket has a Project 2025 agenda that includes a national abortion ban. In response, <\/em>DNC Spokesperson Aida Ross released the following statement: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnti-choice extremists like Donald Trump and JD Vance are the reason why cruel abortion bans are ripping away women\u2019s rights across the country \u2014 including the draconian ban going into effect in Iowa today. Now, as even more women will be denied necessary reproductive care, Trump and Vance have a dangerous Project 2025 agenda to ban abortion nationwide, with or without Congress. Vance himself has made it clear that he wants abortion \u2018illegal nationally\u2019 while attacking exceptions for rape and incest. These extreme bans are as horrifying as they are unpopular, and the American people are ready to stop the Trump-Vance ticket\u2019s all-out assault on our basic rights this November.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump \u201cproudly\u201d overturned <\/strong>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/strong> and paved the way for extreme abortion bans to take effect in Iowa and across the country \u2014 something his extreme anti-choice running mate JD Vance has celebrated.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reuters<\/a>: \u201cIowa, like other Republican-controlled states, moved to ban abortion after the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling overturning Roe v. Wade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cI was proudly the person responsible for the ending of \u2026 <\/strong>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cFor 54 years they were trying to get <\/strong>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/strong> terminated, and I did it, and I\u2019m proud to have done it. \u2026 Nobody else was going to get that done but me<\/strong>, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cAfter 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill <\/strong>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/strong>\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance<\/a>: \u201cI think that what I really think on \u2013 so first of all, the <\/strong>Dobbs<\/em><\/strong> decision, everybody knows, overruled <\/strong>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 I think that was the right decision.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump campaign radio ad<\/a>: “And Trump nominated conservative judges, leading to Roe v. Wade<\/em> being overturned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump celebrated states enacting draconian abortion bans across the country as \u201cworking very brilliantly\u201d and said he\u2019d allow states to punish women who get an abortion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cWe broke Roe v. Wade and we did something that nobody thought was possible. We gave it back to the states, and the states are working very brilliantly \u2026 But they\u2019re working, and it\u2019s working the way it\u2019s supposed to.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cMy view is now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint. The states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both and whatever they decide must be the law of the land, and in this case, the law of the state.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interviewer<\/a>: \u201cAre you comfortable if states decide to punish women who access abortions after the procedure is banned?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

[\u2026]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump: \u201cAgain, that\u2019s going to be\u2014I don\u2019t have to be comfortable or uncomfortable. The states are going to make that decision. The states are going to have to be comfortable or uncomfortable, not me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[\u2026]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interviewer: \u201cProsecuting women for getting abortions after the ban. But are you comfortable with it?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump: \u201cThe states are going to say. It\u2019s irrelevant whether I\u2019m comfortable or not. It\u2019s totally irrelevant, because the states are going to make those decisions.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance praised extreme abortion bans \u2014 including six-week bans like Iowa\u2019s and those without rape or incest exceptions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News<\/a>: \u201cVance pointed to Ohio\u2019s so-called heartbeat bill, which took effect hours after the Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision. <\/strong>The law bans abortions after the first fetal heartbeat is detected, which can be as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018I think that\u2019s a good bill,\u2019 Vance said.<\/strong> \u2018Florida has gone a slightly different direction. Virginia has gone a slightly different direction. When we\u2019re figuring this new legal regime out, I think it makes sense right now to let the states decide this stuff. And right now, states are moving into pro-life direction. I think that\u2019s a good thing.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cincinnati Enquirer<\/a>: \u201cDubbed the \u2018heartbeat bill,\u2019 the [Ohio abortion ban] criminalizes all abortions performed after the detection of fetal cardiac activity, which is about six weeks into a pregnancy<\/strong>\u2026 providers could face fifth-degree felony charges and up to one year in prison. The law has an exception to save the life of a patient but no exceptions for rape or incest.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Independent<\/a>: \u201cJD Vance calls pregnancy from rape and incest \u2018inconvenient\u2019 as he backs Texas abortion law\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe question was prompted by the new, restrictive abortion law in Texas that bans the procedure after six weeks, at a time when most women don\u2019t know they\u2019re pregnant. The law is likely to stop up to 90 per cent of abortions and doesn\u2019t make exceptions for rape or incest. Mr Vance defended the law,<\/strong> saying that \u2018in Texas, they\u2019re trying to make it easier for babies to be born.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump and Vance\u2019s Project 2025 agenda includes a national abortion ban. Trump once even left the door open for six-week bans like Iowa\u2019s.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cThere of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life. And it\u2019s very important.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump on if he would sign a six-week national abortion ban<\/a>: \u201cI’m looking at all options.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cJD Vance said in 2022 he \u2018would like abortion to be illegal nationally\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/strong>During a podcast interview in January 2022, then-candidate JD Vance said he \u2018certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally\u2019 and was \u2018sympathetic\u2019 to the view that a national ban was necessary to stop women from traveling across states to obtain an abortion.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newsweek<\/a>: \u201cJ.D. Vance Backs \u2018National Standard\u2019 for Abortions\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daily Beast<\/a>: \u201cJ.D. Vance suggested he would support prohibiting abortion even in cases of rape and incest\u2014and dismissed those catalysts as \u2018inconvenient.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Republic<\/a>: \u201cOn January 20, 2025, conservatives plan to resurrect a 150-year-old defunct law to ban abortion across the nation.<\/strong> This is not a secret plan\u2014far from it. It\u2019s part of the 180-Day Playbook produced by Project 2025, detailing priorities for an incoming conservative president on day one. These 900 pages lay out a Christian nationalist vision of the United States, one in which married heterosexuality is the only valid form of sexual expression and identity; all pregnancies would be carried to term, even if that requires coercion or death; and transgender and gender-nonconforming people do not exist\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe playbook says the president should enforce a 150-year-old law, the Comstock Act, which right-wing groups see as a way to ban abortion nationally because it outlaws the use of the mail for the purposes of sending or receiving any object that could be used for an abortion.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance<\/a>: \u201cI\u2019ve reviewed a lot of [Project 2025]. There are some good ideas in there.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Axios<\/a>: \u201c[Project 2025] is undeniably a Trump-driven operation.<\/strong> The biggest tell: Johnny McEntee \u2014 one of Trump’s closest White House aides, and his most fervent internal loyalty enforcer \u2014 is a senior adviser to Project 2025. One of the most powerful architects is Stephen Miller, a top West Wing adviser for the Trump administration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times<\/a>: \u201cRoberts told me that he views Heritage\u2019s role today as \u2018institutionalizing Trumpism.\u2019 <\/strong>This includes leading Project 2025, a transition blueprint that outlines a plan to consolidate power in the executive branch, dismantle federal agencies and recruit and vet government employees to free the next Republican president from a system that Roberts views as stacked against conservative power. The lesson of Trump\u2019s first year in office, Roberts told me, is that \u2018the Trump administration \u2026 simply got a slow start. And Heritage and our allies in Project 2025 believe that must never be repeated.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

REALITY CHECK: Attacks on reproductive rights, like Trump and Vance\u2019s anti-choice Project 2025 agenda to rip away reproductive freedoms, are wildly unpopular.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

USA Today<\/a>: \u201cAmericans overwhelmingly oppose the next goal of many anti-abortion activists, to enact a federal law banning abortion nationwide.<\/strong> By 80%-14%, those surveyed opposed that idea, including 65% of Republicans and 83% of independents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Axios<\/a>: \u201cRecord share of U.S. voters back abortion rights and will vote on it: Gallup\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News<\/a>: \u201cAbortion rights have won in every election since Roe v. Wade was overturned\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Axios<\/a>: \u201cMost Americans support abortion access one year after Roe v. Wade: poll\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN Poll<\/a>: \u201cAbout two-thirds (65%) oppose the 2022 Supreme Court decision, Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization, and 34% approve, numbers that have remained effectively unchanged in CNN\u2019s polling across the nearly two years since the ruling. Those who strongly disapprove of the decision continue to outnumber those who strongly approve by a more than 2-to-1 margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA 69% majority who disapprove of overturning Roe, including 82% of those who strongly disapprove, say that federal politicians should work to pass laws ensuring national abortion access.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
