Republicans&#8217; Project 2025 agenda for a Trump-Vance administration would go even further, calling for hard-earned health care and disability benefits to be ripped away from our veterans including PACT Act beneficiaries. This election is a choice between leaders who will continue to deliver on our sacred promise to those who\u2019ve served our country and a ticket that\u2019s broken that promise time and again. From Donald Trump and JD Vance to MAGA Mike Johnson, any so-called leader working to rip away access to lifesaving medical care from our nation\u2019s veterans is fundamentally unfit to serve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trump and his MAGA cronies are trying to hide their Project 2025 blueprint behind his second term agenda. Here\u2019s an overview of his <\/strong><strong><em>real<\/em><\/strong><strong> plans:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Project 2025 calls for the Department of Veterans Affairs\u2019 (VA) to <strong>place new limits on what claims will make current and future recipients eligible for disability benefits: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/democrats.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=90379082c3d9e6a03baf3f677&amp;id=e7a00082f5&amp;e=7f413be91d\">Project 2025\u2019s Mandate for Leadership, p.650<\/a>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe VA\u2019s Schedule for Rating Disabilities (VASRD) has assigned disability ratings to a growing number of health conditions over time; <strong>some are tenuously related or wholly unrelated to military service. <\/strong>The further growth in presumptive service-connected medical conditions pursued by Congress and Veteran Service Organizations, begun with Agent Orange and most recently for Burn Pits\/Airborne Toxins, has led to historic increases in mandatory VBA spending in recent years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The VA has a time-phased plan to reassess the VASRD and its ratings for compensation, but this internal process can be slow and laborious, requires Office of Management and Budget (OMB) approvals, and can become politically charged both in Congress and with VSOs. <strong>The next Administration should explore how VASRD reviews could be accelerated with clearance from OMB to target significant cost savings from revising disability rating awards for future claimants<\/strong> <strong>while preserving them fully or partially for existing claimants.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In other words, this plan would:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/project-2025-veterans\/\">Rob<\/a> brave veterans and active service members of billions of dollars in hard-earned benefits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drastically reduce the federal workforce, which employs 300,000 veterans, leaving a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govexec.com\/workforce\/2024\/07\/project-2025-worst-case-scenario-veterans\/397874\/\">substantial number of\u00a0 veterans, many of them disabled, without jobs.<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/project-2025-veterans\/\">Privatize<\/a> the Veterans Health Administration, allowing Trump\u2019s ultra-rich buddies to profit off of Americans who made the fearless sacrifice to serve our country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/project-2025-veterans\/\">Slash<\/a> disability compensation for veterans who were injured in the line of duty and strip some disabled veterans of these benefits entirely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/project-2025-veterans\/\">Bar<\/a> certain groups of veterans from enrolling in Veterans Administration medical care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afge.org\/article\/project-2025-seeks-to-dismantle-agencies-terminate-up-to-1-million-federal-workers\/\">Shut down<\/a> VA hospitals and clinics that veterans rely on for lifesaving health care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>House Republicans have repeatedly proposed drastic cuts to veterans health care programs, including Medicaid and Medicare.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mkikukawa46\/status\/1788005061055975785\">Fox Business<\/a>:<strong> \u201c<\/strong><strong>The House Republican Budget Chair once again called for cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the ACA, saying it is \u2018inevitable\u2019 that they will be on his chopping block.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.protectourcare.org\/fact-sheet-republicans-propose-budget-that-will-raise-health-care-costs-and-rip-coverage-away-from-millions-of-americans\/\">Protect Our Care Fact Sheet<\/a>: \u201cRepublicans Propose Budget That Will Raise Health Care Costs and Rip Coverage Away from Millions of Americans\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/omb\/briefing-room\/2023\/04\/20\/congressional-republicans-legislation-22-cuts-that-would-harm-american-families-seniors-and-veterans\/#:~:text=Undermine%20Medical%20Care%20for%20Veterans,screenings%2C%20mental%20health%20services%2C%20and\">The White House<\/a>: \u201cUndermine Medical Care for Veterans: Cutting funding by 22 percent would mean 30 million fewer veteran outpatient visits, and 81,000 jobs lost across the Veterans Health Administration\u2014leaving veterans unable to get appointments for care including wellness visits, cancer screenings, mental health services, and substance use disorder treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2024\/03\/26\/fact-sheet-as-house-republicans-release-budget-to-increase-health-care-costs-and-take-away-coverage-president-biden-and-vice-president-harris-fight-to-lower-health-care-costs-and-protect-and-strengt\/#:~:text=Raise%20prescription%20drug%20prices%20for,repealing%20the%20Inflation%20Reduction%20Act.\">White House Fact Sheet<\/a>: \u201cThe Republican Budget would side with Big Pharma to <strong>increase drug prices and seniors\u2019 out-of-pocket costs by repealing the Inflation Reduction Act.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMedicare would no longer be able to negotiate lower drug prices. Big Pharma would once again be allowed to set whatever price they want, <strong>leaving seniors and taxpayers on the hook and facing higher prices.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBig Pharma would no longer pay Medicare back when they increase drug prices faster than inflation, allowing them to jack up prices with no accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cSeniors would go back to paying up to $400 for insulin, instead of the $35 price cap per monthly insulin prescription they have today.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vice President Kamala Harris worked alongside President Biden to pass the PACT Act despite Republicans&#8217; attempts to block the lifesaving bill. So far, over 1 million PACT-related claims have now been granted \u2014 with more than 888,000 veterans and survivors across all 50 states and U.S. territories now receiving new benefits. <\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/21\/us\/politics\/biden-burn-pits-va-pact-act.html\">New York Times<\/a>: \u201cPresident Biden announced on Tuesday that his administration has approved <strong>more than one million claims from veterans injured by toxic exposures during their service, actions made possible by a new law he championed, officials said.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumnews1.com\/wi\/milwaukee\/news\/2024\/03\/05\/pact-act-coverage-rolls-out-for-veterans-years-ahead-of-schedule\">Spectrum News<\/a>: <strong>\u201cMarch 5, 2024 marks the first day of one of the largest expansions in VA health care for veterans across the country.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStarting on March 5, veterans with toxic exposure from the Vietnam War, Gulf War and post-September 11th era, will now be covered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2024\/05\/21\/fact-sheet-president-biden-to-announce-1-million-pact-act-claims-approved-benefits-delivered-to-veterans-in-all-50-states-and-u-s-territories\/\">White House Fact Sheet<\/a>: <strong>\u201cUnder President Biden\u2019s leadership, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has processed claims at the fastest rate in history, and is delivering health care to more veterans than ever before.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MAGA Mike Johnson, Trump\u2019s top minion in Congress, voted against the historic PACT Act. <\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2023\/10\/25\/no-pact-act-yes-defense-bills-new-house-speaker-mike-johnsons-voting-record-military-and-vets-issues.html\">Military.com<\/a>: \u201cHere&#8217;s How New House Speaker Mike Johnson Voted on Veteran and Military Issues\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn veterans issues, last year <strong>he voted against the PACT Act, considered the biggest increase of veterans benefits in a generation that expanded benefits and health care for those exposed to toxic substances during their military service.\u201d<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJohnson also voted against a year-end package of smaller veterans and military family measures last year. Among other provisions, the bill mandated that states recognize service members and spouses\u2019 valid professional licenses from other states and ensured veterans won&#8217;t lose GI Bill benefits if schools have to close in a future emergency like they did for the COVID-19 pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Many extreme MAGA Republicans in the Senate tried to block passage of the PACT Act \u2013 literally fist-bumping one another for their attempts to deny benefits to veterans.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/07\/27\/politics\/senate-burn-pit-bill-fails\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>: \u201cSenate procedural vote on burn pits legislation fails amid widespread Republican opposition\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/07\/29\/1114417097\/veterans-burn-pit-bill-republican-senators\">NPR<\/a>: <strong>\u201cThe Senate passed a bill to help sick veterans. Then 25 Republicans reversed course\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey are: John Barrasso, Marsha Blackburn, Roy Blunt, Mike Braun, Bill Cassidy, John Cornyn, Tom Cotton, Kevin Cramer, Ted Cruz, Joni Ernst, Deb Fischer, Bill Hagerty, Josh Hawley, Cindy Hyde-Smith, Jim Inhofe, Ron Johnson, John Kennedy, Roger Marshall, Mitch McConnell, Rob Portman, Ben Sasse, Tim Scott, Rick Scott, Dan Sullivan and Todd Young. Sens. Additionally, Sens. Steve Daines and Roger Wicker voted against the bill after not voting in June.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/ted-cruz-steve-daines-fist-bump-blocking-burn-pit-veterans_n_62e4b68ae4b0c60a5668673d\">HuffPost<\/a>: <strong>\u201cSen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) was captured on video Thursday fist-bumping Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) shortly after Republicans managed to block the PACT Act,<\/strong> which would allow soldiers, sailors and airmen exposed to pits of smoldering waste in combat zones to be covered by the Veterans Affairs health care system for linked illnesses. Many are suffering from cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trump has made it crystal clear that he does not respect veterans and their service to our country, calling fallen veterans \u201closers\u201d and \u201csuckers\u201d and pushing to slash disabled veterans\u2019 benefits while president.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2020\/09\/trump-americans-who-died-at-war-are-losers-and-suckers\/615997\/\">The Atlantic<\/a>: \u201cTrump: Americans Who Died in War Are <strong>\u2018Losers\u2019 and&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Suckers\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen President Donald Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, near Paris, in 2018, he blamed rain for the last-minute decision, saying that \u2018the helicopter couldn\u2019t fly\u2019 and that the Secret Service wouldn\u2019t drive him there. Neither claim was true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTrump rejected the idea of the visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain, and because <strong>he did not believe it important to honor American war dead<\/strong>, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day. In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, \u2018Why should I go to that cemetery?
