The overtime pay provision is one of the least popular provisions of the enormously unpopular Project 2025 playbook. From now until November, we\u2019ll make sure voters know the choice they face in this election is between a future with the leadership of Vice President Harris and Governor Walz, who fight every day for workers, or one where Trump and Vance take us backwards, stripping workers of rights secured by the labor movement and putting profits of over working people.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trump\u2019s Project 2025 agenda is extremely unpopular among hardworking Americans. Out of policies listed in a recent Navigator Poll, allowing employers to stop paying hourly workers overtime was one of the least popular and considered among the most harmful.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/navigatorresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Navigator-Project-2025-Report-07.12.2024.pdf\">Navigator Poll<\/a>: Among all of the economic\/health care policies surveyed, allowing employers to stop paying hourly workers overtime ranked within the top three for most unpopular and harmful to the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcH6KbkYERmHv9D8HcHJ5RAjvfqTQFPotXJKbsYd7fcs7vESlKxicWvIZL4dB8hP3IpTaX3pI7m-woR4Ntww0_rPh008upCKn4AVJfr7Tc5t1Kv7n_u0hTwxdABfBjHkOL_ZyhGvGE2wlZk2LQMqoLoUQ?key=7D9R_hFMKO7toJLklSKNqQ\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/navigatorresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Navigator-Project-2025-Report-07.12.2024.pdf\">Navigator Poll<\/a>: Voters were told to rank Project 2025 policies on whether they thought it would help the country, hurt the country, or would have no impact, including on \u201cAllowing employers to stop paying hourly workers overtime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXesejv5rJwBo8LB-skNlJBmzhIKKPS41gz-l69Cj6mv94htUfjOGsdSEC0s5iCH3mGVglntFAWwdg8olC9Hz3bZtVJFJ0n0YM5rd0Jf34HEYdklkcSzm8R-ZKp2GAyESU2OoTYK6cy1W0CzcQoK7eAMwsE?key=7D9R_hFMKO7toJLklSKNqQ\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>84% overall said the policy would hurt the country, including, 93% of Democrats, 87% of independents, <strong>84% of non-MAGA Republicans, and 67% of MAGA Republicans.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trump\u2019s Project 2025 blueprint, written for him by his extremist allies, threatens to:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lower the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/project-2025-would-cut-access-to-overtime-pay\/\">overtime threshold<\/a> and take away overtime pay eligibility from <a href=\"https:\/\/democracyforward.org\/cut-wages-create-unsafe-workplaces-and-destabilize-our-economy\/\">millions of workers<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/static.project2025.org\/2025_MandateForLeadership_FULL.pdf\">Mandate for Leadership, p. 592<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/project-2025-would-exploit-child-labor-by-allowing-minors-to-work-in-dangerous-conditions-with-fewer-protections\/\">Slash<\/a> child labor protections, allowing children to work in dangerous conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/project-2025-would-undo-the-nlrbs-progress-on-protecting-workers-right-to-organize\/\">Erode<\/a> the ability for workers to unionize by kneecapping the National Labor Relations Board and its ability to protect workers\u2019 rights\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gut diversity, equity, and inclusion programs focused on promoting access and opportunity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/janicegassam\/2024\/07\/08\/three-ways-project-2025-will-impact-american-workplaces\/\">eliminating<\/a> the collection of EEOC data and threatening to widen workplace inequities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make it easier to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/project-2025-would-undo-the-nlrbs-progress-on-protecting-workers-right-to-organize\/\">classify<\/a> workers as \u2018contractors\u2019, undermining their ability to unionize and receive basic protections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trump\u2019s Project 2025 agenda would erode overtime pay and unions, allowing big businesses to exploit workers across the country and prevent them from receiving the benefits they deserve.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/aug\/04\/project-2025-trump-unions-overtime-pay\">The Guardian<\/a>: \u201c<strong>Project 2025 would shrink many workers\u2019 paychecks by calling for a law that limits when they receive overtime pay <\/strong>\u2013 to only when they work more than 80 hours over a two-week period, instead of the current system of working more than 40 hours in one week. That means if an employee works 55 hours one week and 25 the next, that worker won\u2019t qualify for overtime pay, despite working 55 hours one week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn another proposal that would slice labor costs, Project 2025 says workers who qualify for overtime pay should be able to choose to receive compensatory time rather than time-and-a-half overtime pay. The project says this idea aims to give workers more time with their families, but <strong>many worker advocates say it is a ploy to enable employers to twist workers\u2019 arms so that they take comp time instead of time-and-a-half pay.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/democracyforward.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/2024-05_Peoples-Guide-Pro-2025.pdf\">Democracy Forward<\/a>: \u201cIn 2024, the Biden administration issued a policy that will make over four million workers newly eligible to qualify for overtime pay. The U.S. Department of Labor did this by raising the \u201covertime threshold,\u201d which is the salary ceiling under which salaried workers still qualify automatically for overtime pay if they work more than 40 hours in a week, even though those workers are not paid hourly. [&#8230;]&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cProject 2025 doesn\u2019t want to raise this threshold. <strong>Instead, Project 2025 proposes lowering the threshold and taking away overtime eligibility for millions of workers. <\/strong>This would leave at least four million working people in industries that pay annually but still at lower wages stuck working long hours without overtime pay \u2014 everything from hospitality to manufacturing, administrative roles, and more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/project-2025-would-undo-the-nlrbs-progress-on-protecting-workers-right-to-organize\/\">Center for American Progress<\/a>: \u201cHowever, these gains are under threat from The Heritage Foundation\u2019s Project 2025\u2014<strong>a playbook with strategies for eroding checks and balances across the government that offers instructions for gutting the NLRB\u2019s enforcement capacity.<\/strong> This would threaten workers\u2019 ability to come together in unions to bargain for better wages and working conditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[\u2026]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe NLRB also changed a standard from 2019 that allowed many workers to be classified as independent contractors\u2014who are unable to unionize\u2014rather than as regular employees. <strong>The antiworker Project 2025 advises undoing this change, which would harm workers\u2019 ability to come together in unions.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/janicegassam\/2024\/07\/08\/three-ways-project-2025-will-impact-american-workplaces\/\">Forbes<\/a>:<strong> \u201c<\/strong>The Project 2025 playbook calls for a complete gutting of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in the workplace, <strong>stating the need for a reversal of the \u2018DEI Revolution in Labor Policy,<\/strong>\u2019 and insisting that the next conservative Administration \u2018eliminate every one of these wrongful and burdensome ideological projects.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cProject 2025 also proposes an amendment to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the legislation that protects against discrimination based on a set of protected classes that includes race, color, religion, sex, and national origin, <strong>suggesting that the collecting of EEO-1 data like race, should be prohibited.\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/static.project2025.org\/2025_MandateForLeadership_FULL.pdf\">Project 2025, Mandate for Leadership, p. 82<\/a>: \u201c<strong>Congress should also consider whether public-sector unions are appropriate in the first place.<\/strong> The bipartisan consensus up until the middle of the 20th century held that these unions were not compatible with constitutional government. After more than half a century of experience with public-sector union frustrations of good government management, it is hard to avoid reaching the same conclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/society\/donald-trump-is-not-a-friend-to-american-workers\/\">The Nation<\/a>: \u201cDonald Trump Is Not a Friend to American Workers\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThis is a Republican Party fueled by union-busting billionaires who are convinced that hiring expensive law firms will run out the clock on workers who organize, and elected leaders like Trump who want to ensure that law enforcement and the judiciary will be on their side.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Labor protections would be bulldozed by Project 2025, enabling children to work in hazardous conditions.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/project-2025-would-exploit-child-labor-by-allowing-minors-to-work-in-dangerous-conditions-with-fewer-protections\/#:~:text=Despite%20strong%20evidence%20that%20dangerous,against%20hazardous%20work%20for%20children.\">Center for American Progress<\/a>: \u201cDespite strong evidence that dangerous child labor can harm young workers, the far-right authoritarian playbook known as Project 2025 proposes eliminating protections against hazardous work for children. Specifically, Project 2025 calls on the U.S. Department of Labor to \u2018amend its hazard-order regulations to permit teenage workers access to work in regulated jobs with proper training and parental consent.\u2019 <strong>In plain English, revising these \u2018hazard-order regulations\u2019 means letting teens work in hazardous jobs.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Former Trump administration officials were masterminds behind Project 2025, including former acting Labor Secretary Patrick Pizzella.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/11\/politics\/trump-allies-project-2025\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>: \u201cIn addition to Vought, two other former Trump Cabinet secretaries wrote chapters for \u2018Mandate for Leadership\u2019: Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson and acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller. Three more former department heads \u2013 National Intelligence Director John Ratcliffe, acting Transportation Secretary Steven Bradbury and <strong>acting Labor Secretary Patrick Pizzella \u2013 are listed as contributors.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Trump administration hurt American workers every chance they got.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2020\/10\/26\/trumps-labor-secretary-is-a-wrecking-ball-aimed-at-workers\">New Yorker<\/a>: \u201cTrump\u2019s Labor Secretary Is a Wrecking Ball Aimed at Workers\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2019\/07\/12\/trumps-acting-labor-secretary-pick-feared-by-unions-1589621\">Politico<\/a>: \u201cTrump&#8217;s acting Labor secretary pick feared by unions\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut Pizzella\u2019s ascendance to the top of the agency tasked with enforcing labor protections is something unions have long feared. He worked alongside disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff to shield the Northern Mariana Islands from federal labor laws in the 1990s, and generally has favored easing workplace regulations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/daily-labor-report\/white-house-to-seek-11-cut-in-labor-department-spending\">Bloomberg Law<\/a>: \u201cWhite House Proposes 11% Cut in Labor Department Spending\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/05\/25\/trump-federal-employees-unions-civil-servants-609167\">Politico<\/a>: \u201cPresident Donald Trump on Friday issued a series of executive orders to weaken the influence of government unions and make it easier for agencies to fire civil servants. \u2026 [The orders] also direct federal agencies to renegotiate their labor contracts and cap the amount of paid time that workers can take off to conduct union-related business.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In the meantime, VP Harris is garnering support from labor unions \u2013 showing that she will have the backs of workers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/08\/19\/labor-union-presidents-endorse-kamala-harris-dnc\/74857741007\/\">USA Today<\/a>: \u201cPresidents from 6 labor unions throw support behind Kamala Harris at DNC: Watch speech\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aflcio.org\/press\/releases\/afl-cio-unanimously-endorses-kamala-harris-president\">AFL-CIO<\/a>: \u201cAFL-CIO Unanimously Endorses Kamala Harris for President\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018Following a vote of its Executive Council, which represents 60 unions and 12.5 million workers, today the AFL-CIO unanimously endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president in the 2024 election.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018From day one, Vice President Kamala Harris has been a true partner in leading the most pro-labor administration in history,\u2019 said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler. \u2018At every step in her distinguished career in public office, she\u2019s proven herself a principled and tenacious fighter for working people and a visionary leader we can count on.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uaw.org\/uaw-endorses-kamala-harris-for-president-ahead-of-mass-rally-in-detroit\/\">UAW<\/a>: \u201cUAW Endorses Kamala Harris for President Ahead of Mass Rally in Detroit\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018Our job in this election is to defeat Donald Trump and elect Kamala Harris to build on her proven track record of delivering for the working class,\u2019 said UAW President Shawn Fain. \u2018We stand at a crossroads in this country.
