In response to Donald Trump <\/em>tapping<\/em><\/a> Dr. Mehmet Oz as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator, <\/em>DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDonald Trump has already talked about \u2018cutting\u2019<\/a> Medicare and Medicaid and tossing our seniors out in the cold \u2013 that\u2019s why he wants to leave these critical programs in the hands of an out-of-touch lackey like Dr. Oz who\u2019s threatened to privatize them before and is now getting<\/a> the green light for devastating cuts. America\u2019s seniors can\u2019t afford to let another TV personality go after their hard-earned benefits, and Democrats will stand up for our seniors against whatever reckless schemes Trump and Dr. Oz try to push to slash Americans\u2019 access to health care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NEW: Donald Trump just chose Dr. Mehmet Oz to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, suggesting in the announcement that Oz will help the Trump-Vance administration gut Medicare.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garrett Haake<\/a>: <\/strong>\u201cBuried in Oz announcement is this line which suggests cuts to Medicare may be on the table<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018He will also cut waste and fraud within our Country\u2019s most expensive Government Agency, which is a third of our Nation\u2019s Healthcare spend, and a quarter of our entire National Budget.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lever<\/a>: \u201c[Dr. Oz\u2019s] program could move seniors and most Americans into private insurance plans that have been raising premiums and denying roughly one in ten medical claims,<\/strong> according to a recent government report finding that the plans frequently refuse to cover services required by Medicare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo pay for his privatization plan, Oz has proposed a 20 percent payroll tax, which would ultimately transfer money from workers to the Republican Party\u2019s private insurance donors that have been reporting record profits while jacking up premiums<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn other words, Oz himself wants to increase taxes on lower- and middle-class Americans to fund his own version of a corporate-run, universal health care system \u2014 one that could come with high patient costs, continued barriers to care, and a windfall for the health insurance industry<\/strong>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Oz also believes Americans have \u201cno right\u201d to health care, threatening the Affordable Care Act. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blavity<\/a>: <\/strong>\u201c[Oz] explained his belief that \u2018health\u2019 is only a right for those who can afford insurance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018Give them a way of crawling back out of the abyss, of darkness, of fear, over not having the health they need, and give them an opportunity,\u2019 he said in the clip. \u2018They don\u2019t have the right to health<\/strong>, but they have a right to access \u2014 a chance to get that health.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reminder: Donald Trump and JD Vance have already repeatedly proposed gutting Medicare & Medicaid.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities<\/a>: \u201cPresident Trump has made clear that his goal remains to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), including its expansion of Medicaid to low-income adults, and to impose rigid caps on the federal government\u2019s Medicaid spending.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cHis avowed stance, however, is at odds with Trump\u2019s own record as president: Each of his White House budget proposals included cuts to Social Security and Medicare programs.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
