Here\u2019s what to expect from Vought: taking money out of Americans\u2019 pockets, cuts to Social Security and Medicare, and attacks on Americans\u2019 health care. Today, Senate Republicans confirmed Project 2025\u2019s \u201cchief architect\u201d Russ Vought\u2019s nomination to be the Office of Management and Budget director. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Max Cohen, Punchbowl News<\/a>: \u201cSenate votes 53-47 to confirm Russ Vought to be OMB director.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

REMINDER: Trump\u2019s disastrous federal aid freeze order was the <\/strong>\u201cbrainchild\u201d<\/strong><\/a> of Vought, jeopardizing critical programs for millions of Americans. After causing panic and chaos, Trump\u2019s White House OMB was forced to rescind the freeze. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: The White House memo announcing a federal spending freeze, rescinded Wednesday afternoon amid chaos and backlash, was the brainchild of Russell Vought,<\/strong> President Donald Trump\u2019s pick to direct the Office of Management and Budget. Stephen Miller, deputy White House chief of staff, explained on CNN that Vought felt that the freeze was needed. <\/strong>Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at her first briefing that Vought asked her to convey that \u2018the line to his office is open\u2019 if agency heads \u2018feel that programs are necessary.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politico<\/a>: \u201cMonday\u2019s memo from Trump\u2019s Office of Management and Budget ordering a sweeping freeze of federal financial assistance is the boldest, and clearest example of the administration not only leaning on the people who wrote Project 2025 but employing its strategies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe memo, which throws into jeopardy billions of federal assistance for programs like providing school meals and supporting homeless veterans, hews closely to the strategy Trump\u2019s pick for OMB director Russell Vought sketched out for bringing the federal bureaucracy to heel in Project 2025\u2019s second chapter. <\/strong>\u2026 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile Vought has yet to be confirmed by the Senate, multiple people close to the administration told POLITICO that both he and Trump policy chief Stephen Miller have played key roles in the funding freeze.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vought\u2019s extreme and out-of-touch record includes his career-long plans to gut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, repeal the Affordable Care Act, and strip away other earned benefits.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cVought has sold many Republicans on the untested premise that the GOP can push to obliterate almost all other major forms of federal spending, especially programs that benefit lower-income Americans<\/strong> …<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVought\u2019s budget proposal calls for cutting $9 trillion<\/strong> over the next decade from thousands of domestic programs \u2014 slashing funding for government agencies, student loans, and anti-poverty programs such as housing, health care and food assistance \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe plan includes $2 trillion in cuts to Medicaid<\/strong>, the health program for the poor; more than $600 billion in cuts to the Affordable Care Act<\/strong>; more than $400 billion in cuts to food stamps<\/strong>; hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to educational subsidies; and a halving of the State Department and the Labor Department,<\/strong> among other federal agencies.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cProposed reforms would also end coverage of disabilities unrelated to military duties and training. As seen with recent burn pit legislation, many conditions are considered qualified disabilities as presumptively connected despite overwhelming evidence that many conditions have no scientifically established link to the presumptive cause.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russ Vought<\/a>: \u201cProposed reforms would also end coverage of disabilities<\/strong> unrelated to military duties and training. \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Budget would reduce these disability payments by 30 percent<\/strong>\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cEach of [Trump\u2019s] White House budget proposals included cuts to Social Security and Medicare programs.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vought also has a long extreme anti-choice record, including calls for a total \u201cabolition\u201d of abortion access \u2013 even in cases of rape, incest, or to save a woman\u2019s life \u2013 and his fight to ban medication abortion through his organization Center for Renewing America. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vought<\/a>: \u201cWell, I don\u2019t actually believe in those exceptions.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to get to abolition<\/strong>, \u2026 I want to get as far as we possibly can.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times<\/a>: \u201cRussell T. Vought<\/strong>, a former senior Trump administration official who ran the Office of Management and Budget, is celebrated by the anti-abortion movement for successfully blocking funds for Planned Parenthood during the Trump administration.<\/strong> He now runs a think tank with close ties to the former president that has backed arguments in a Supreme Court case attempting to undo the 2000 approval of mifepristone<\/strong>, a widely used abortion medication.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
