In response to Donald Trump threatening to illegally send U.S. citizens to prisons in El Salvador, <\/em>DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCorrupt wannabe dictator<\/a> Donald Trump \u2018love[s]\u2019 the idea of illegally shipping Americans to foreign prisons. Let\u2019s be clear about what Trump is saying: He\u2019s willing to strip Americans of their constitutional rights and break U.S. law. Trump\u2019s dangerous plans are a flagrant violation of our Constitution \u2014 and a horrifying sign of what could come if we don\u2019t fight back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last night, Donald Trump said he <\/strong>\u201clove[s]\u201d<\/strong><\/a> the idea of stripping American citizens of their constitutional rights and sending them to El Salvador\u2019s prisons \u2014 places notorious for human rights violations.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reporter<\/a>: \u201cEl Salvador \u2013 The president there said he would be willing to take American citizens in federal prison population<\/strong>. Is that one of the ideas you\u2019re going to be discussing?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump: \u201cI love that<\/strong> \u2026 I would be honored to give them. \u2026 I have suggested that, you know, why shouldn\u2019t it stop just to people that cross the border illegally? \u2026 I think if we could get El Salvador or somebody to take them I’d be very happy with it.\u201d<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. State Department, 2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: El Salvador<\/a>: \u201cTorture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, and Other Related Abuses<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe law prohibited such practices, but there were credible reports that government officials employed them<\/strong>. \u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPrison conditions before the state of exception were harsh and life threatening due to gross overcrowding; inadequate sanitary conditions; insufficient food and water shortages; a lack of medical services in prison facilities; and physical attacks<\/strong>. \u2026 Human rights organizations reported that as of August 22, more than 70 detainees died in prisons from violence, insufficient medical care, and chronic health conditions.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human Rights Watch<\/a>: \u201cAt least 189 detainees have died in prison during the state of emergency, human rights groups reported in October.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHundreds of Venezuelans who were deported to El Salvador from the United States in recent days could face long or indefinite detention in a prison system rife with human rights abuses, according to attorneys and experts on the region<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has a long history of attacking Americans\u2019 constitutional rights and even called to <\/strong>\u201cterminate\u201d<\/strong><\/a> the Constitution. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

PBS<\/a>: \u201cTrump faced rebuke Sunday from officials in both parties after calling for the \u201ctermination\u201d of parts of the Constitution over his lie that the 2020 election was stolen. \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules<\/strong>, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution,\u2019 [Trump] wrote.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDonald Trump\u2019s rapid-fire and controversial moves that have ranged from banning birthright citizenship to firing 18 inspectors general means the US president has shown a greater willingness than his predecessors to violate the constitution and federal law<\/strong>, some historians and legal scholars say.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Associated Press<\/a>: \u201cTrump signed an order to reshape how elections in the US are run. Is it constitutional?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTrump\u2019s order calls for dramatic changes to voter registration and election procedures. For one, it requires states to ensure that all ballots are returned by Election Day \u2013 not simply postmarked by that day \u2013 or risk losing federal funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut the authority he\u2019s claiming goes beyond what\u2019s outlined in the Constitution<\/strong>, several election law experts said. Article I, Section 4 of the Constitution says states get to determine the \u2018times, places and manner\u2019 of how elections are run.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trump administration has already ignored judges\u2019 orders and wrongly sent people to El Salvador \u2014 failing to check if the people they are sending are criminals. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe U.S. has already acknowledged Kilmar Abrego Garcia <\/strong>– a Salvadoran migrant who lived in the U.S legally with a work permit –<\/strong> was deported in error <\/strong>last month when the government flew three planes of migrants alleged to have ties to violent gangs or immigration violations to the Central America country. \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAbrego Garcia was wrongfully placed on the third flight despite an October 2019 judicial order granting him protection from deportation<\/strong>, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement official has said in a court filing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CBS News<\/a>: \u201cU.S. sent 238 migrants to Salvadoran mega-prison; documents indicate most have no apparent criminal records<\/strong>\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c[T]hrough internal government documents, we have obtained a list of their identities and found that an overwhelming majority have no apparent criminal convictions or even criminal charges.<\/strong> \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
