In response to consumer sentiment plunging for the third month in a row under Donald Trump,<\/em> DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnder Donald Trump, consumer sentiment in April plunged to one of the worst readings in over 70 years \u2014 hitting a rate lower than anything seen during the Great Recession<\/a>. Americans are \u2018petrified\u2019<\/a> and already pulling back their spending as Trump\u2019s chaotic policies cause grocery and energy costs to reach record highs while setting retirement savings<\/a> on fire. Trump is driving the economy into a ditch and refusing to take action \u2014 all so he can give handouts to his billionaire friends as hardworking Americans suffer.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the third month in a row, consumer sentiment is plunging under Donald Trump \u2014 hitting levels worse than during the Great Recession \u2014 and inflation expectations are rising to historic highs. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

University of Michigan<\/a>: \u201cConsumer sentiment fell for the fourth straight month, plunging 11% from March.<\/strong> \u2026 Sentiment has now lost more than 30% since December 2024<\/strong> amid growing worries about trade war developments that have oscillated over the course of the year. Consumers report multiple warning signs that raise the risk of recession: expectations for business conditions, personal finances, incomes, inflation, and labor markets all continued to deteriorate this month. <\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYear-ahead inflation expectations surged from 5.0% last month to 6.7% this month, the highest reading since 1981 <\/strong>and marking four consecutive months of unusually large increases of 0.5 percentage points or more. This month\u2019s rise was seen across all three political affiliations. Long-run inflation expectations climbed from 4.1% in March to 4.4% in April,<\/strong> reflecting a particularly large jump among independents.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consumers are <\/strong>\u201cpetrified\u201d<\/strong><\/a>: Americans are cutting back on spending as grocery and energy costs hit record highs and <\/strong>recession<\/strong><\/a> fears increase. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
