Republicans are padding the wallets of their billionaire donors while their constituents go hungry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Republicans repeatedly voted to slash food assistance for children, veterans, and seniors. This budget will force states to either cut food assistance or reduce other critical state funding like public safety, education, or infrastructure \u2014 all to give the GOP\u2019s ultra-wealthy friends another round of tax handouts. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump and the GOP have made their priorities clear: pad billionaires\u2019 wallets, even if it means Americans go hungry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

WATCH: Senators <\/strong>Amy Klobuchar<\/strong><\/a> and <\/strong>Ben Ray Luj\u00e1n<\/strong><\/a>, along with Senate Democrats, are fighting to protect funding for food assistance, voting to prevent states from being forced to pick between food assistance and public safety, education, or infrastructure. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senator Amy Klobuchar<\/a>: \u201cIn nutrition assistance alone, this bill shifts tens of billions of dollars onto the states, creating chaos for state budgets and hardship for families. <\/strong>\u2026 Seriously, the largest shift in this whole bill, the largest unfunded mandate is on the backs of kids and veterans and seniors and people with disabilities. $64 billion over to the states. 44 of them have balanced budget amendments. You know they can\u2019t pay for this. It\u2019s hurting local grocery stores. It\u2019s hurting our farmers, and it\u2019s all done to pay for tax cuts to the wealthy. <\/strong>I say to our colleagues, vote for families over billionaires, vote for fiscal sanity over this big, beautiful betrayal and vote yes, this is an unfunded mandate.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senator Ben Ray Luj\u00e1n<\/a>: \u201cRecently, a Republican colleague said regarding this bill\u2019s SNAP cuts, quote, \u2018if we don\u2019t watch out, people are going to get hurt.\u2019 He\u2019s right. People are going to get hurt.<\/strong> For the past 50 years, the United States of America has maintained a bipartisan promise to feed our children, our veterans, our seniors, and our working families. This bill betrays that promise. <\/strong>It cuts more than $1 trillion from Medicaid, SNAP, cuts that will harm all of our constituents. With this motion, I\u2019m offering my colleagues the opportunity to step away from these devastating cuts to show our fellow Americans that in this country we care for our friends, family, and neighbors who need support. I hope my colleagues on both sides of the aisle can agree that this is a promise worth keeping.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
