And it&rsquo;s clear why: We saw the same divisive Trump that has made him historically unpopular. There was no unity, no bipartisanship, and there will be no change. We aren&rsquo;t the only ones saying it:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trump&rsquo;s SOTU was not unifying or bipartisan, it was divisive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/storyline\/2018-state-of-the-union-address\/trump-talks-unity-sows-division-state-union-n843166\">NBC News<\/a>: &ldquo;President Donald Trump&#39;s first State of the Union address was billed by the White House beforehand as a speech that would be &lsquo;unifying&rsquo; and &lsquo;bipartisan.&rsquo; <strong>It was neither<\/strong>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/editorials\/la-ed-trump-state-of-the-union-20180130-story.html\">Los Angeles Times Editorial<\/a>: &ldquo;In his first State of the Union address, President Trump spoke in an almost conciliatory tone that largely eschewed his usual bluster. <strong>Yet the underlying message was his familiar appeal to fear and resentment,<\/strong> particularly toward noncitizens and foreign adversaries.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/a-divisive-and-misleading-state-of-the-union\/2018\/01\/30\/a52694c4-060e-11e8-94e8-e8b8600ade23_story.html?utm_term=.22c84e60e987\">Washington Post Editorial<\/a>: &ldquo;<strong>A divisive and misleading State of the Union<\/strong>&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2018\/01\/30\/presidential-trump-one-night-wonder-editorials-debates\/1081357001\/\">USA Today Editorial<\/a>: &ldquo;Much of the president&#39;s 80-minute speech seemed <strong>more about inflaming the cultural divide <\/strong>&mdash; on issues ranging from kneeling NFL players to detaining terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay &mdash; than bridging it.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/amphtml\/blogs\/right-turn\/wp\/2018\/01\/30\/trumps-state-of-the-union-a-diatribe-against-immigrants\/?__twitter_impression=true\">Washington Post&rsquo;s Jennifer Rubin<\/a>: &ldquo;<strong>The contrast between Trump&rsquo;s paean to unity and the divisions he has wrought could not be wider<\/strong> &mdash; and according to polls is acknowledged even by Republicans.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kasie\/status\/958533599036411910\">NBC&rsquo;s Kasie Hunt<\/a>: &ldquo;There was a lot of talk about President Trump delivering an uplifting speech There might be lofty rhetoric &mdash; but <strong>make no mistake the frame is one that subtly (and sometimes not-so-subtly) inflames the cultural divide<\/strong> between Trump&rsquo;s America and the America that disdains him&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chrislhayes\/status\/958537227797172225\">MSNBC&rsquo;s Chris Hayes<\/a>: &ldquo;The speech has been artless paint-by-numbers stuff (much of which was fine) and standard Paul Ryan supply side bromides, all shot through with <strong>standard Trump culture war demagoguery<\/strong>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dncpress\/status\/958735930331942912\">Meghan McCain<\/a>: &ldquo;<strong>It was a lot more divisive than I anticipated<\/strong>, but I&rsquo;m sure conservatives will be happy tonight.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dncpress\/status\/958735865232216066\">NBC&rsquo;s Megyn Kelly<\/a>: &ldquo;<strong>This was a speech for his base<\/strong>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dncpress\/status\/958735879312429056\">Matthew Dowd<\/a>: &ldquo;What I was thinking as I was listening to the speech, is that the President met with me after the speech, I would say to him, well, <strong>that was how not to give a unifying speech<\/strong>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simply put, there was no new Trump.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/01\/31\/no-pivot-trumps-first-state-of-the-union-address-didnt-change-a-thing.html\">CNBC<\/a>: &ldquo;President Donald Trump&#39;s first State of the Union speech changed nothing.
